A Family Bible says that Moses was a Captain of sailing ships and he and his wife made many trips to Europe before their first child, Charles, was born. He was the Captain of the Brig Orchilla, which sailed from Charleston, South Carolina on 2 Mar 1850. Passengers included his wife, pregnant with their first child. The trip from South Carolina, around Cape Horn, with a stop at the harbor of Talcahuano, Chile for the birth of Charles, until they docked in San Francisco, took 205 days.
