Funeral services for Dwayne Philbrick, age 85, of O’Neill,will be Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at the United MethodistChurch in O’Neill with burial at the O’Neill Cemetery. Military Graveside Riteswill be conducted by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93. Visitationwill be Tuesday, from 5-8 P.M. at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill. He passed awaySunday Morning, October 23, at the Norfolk Veteran’s Home. Memorials may bemade to the United Methodist Church or the O’Neill Senior Center.
Dwayne is survived by his wifeValera, 2 Daughters, Laveda McDonald and husband, Tim of Lee, Florida, andDiane Carkhuff and husband, Jerry, of Midwest City, OK, and 1 Son, DanielPhilbrick of Beatrice, NE., 3 Grandchildren, and 4 Great Grandchildren.
Dwayne Nathaniel Philbrick and hisidentical twin, Dwight William were born June 29, 1926 in Stuart to Ora andMable (Hutcheson) Philbrick. They graduated from Stuart High School in 1944.They joined the Navy in 1945 and became Hospital Corpsman at Bremerton,Washington.
After 1946, Dwayne worked at theStuart Creamery. He married Valera Lofquest on June 27, 1948 at ClevelandPresbyterian Church North of Stuart. He worked for the State Roads Departmentand Ford Garage in O’Neill before being employed by Niobrara Valley MembershipCorporation for 30 years, retiring in 1989.
Dwayne was a member of the O’NeillUnited Methodist Church, The O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93, OddFellow Lodge and a member of the O’Neill City Council for several terms. He likedto bowl, play golf, go fishing, and play cards, especially Skip-Bo.
He is preceded in death by hisparents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.

Dwayne Nathaniel PHILBRICK and Valera Laveda LOFQUEST were married on 27 June 1948 at Cleveland Presbyterian Church (north of Stuart) in Stuart, Holt, Nebraska. at Cleveland Presbyterian Church in northern Holt Co, Nebraska (the marriage record mistakenly says at O'Neill) by Orin Groff. Her recently widowed mother, Lottie Lofquest, gave consent; Samuel Lofquest was the other witness.

Dwayne and Valera lived for about two years in DeSmet in his aunt Berniece Freeman's first house on the corner of Hwy 25 and Front St. next to the second Freeman house. Dwayne delivered petroleum products for Glenn Van Tassel (Socony Vacuum/Mobile Oil). They then returned to Nebraska, where for many years he was employed with the O'Neill municipal power company. After son Dan's accident in 1970, they cared for him in their home for many years, and Valera especially devoted much time to his rehabilitative therapy. In retirement, Dwayne does a lot of fishing on the Missouri River up near the South Dakota border, where they have a trailer.

Their long-term home is at 920 E. Grant St., O'Neill, NE 68763

Valera Laveda LOFQUEST, daughter of Charles L. LOFQUEST and Lottie A. MUNSON, was born on 8 July 1927 in Holt County, Nebraska. She was a teacher in Stuart in 1948. An avid reader, in more recent years Valera has taken up photography as well as an interest in natural foods.
