Nathaniel served in the Civil War between 1861 and 1862 in Iowa.¹⁷⁵⁸ He enlisted in H Co. 5th Infantry Regiment on 1 July 1861 as a 42 year old private and later served with K Company, 5th Iowa Infantry. He claimed residence in Rossville. He was discharged with a disability at Jefferson City, Missouri on 5 Feb 1862.

[Since no death certificate has been found, it is likely that she actually died elsewhere, possibly while living with one of her children in Oregon or South Dakota.] She is interred in Crab Apple Cemetery beside Nathaniel. Mercy was buried at Crabapple Cemetery in Linn County, Iowa.¹⁷⁶⁸
