Nordland, Troms and Finnmark


Nordland - formerly known as "Helgeland" - includes Bodø, Brønnøy, Leirfjord, Lofoten, Narvik, Rana, Tysfjord, and Verøy. Troms has not changed its name. It includes Harstad, Tromsø, Lavangen, Sørreisa, Balsfjord, Storfjord, and Vesterålen. Finnmark has also not changed its name. It includes Alta, Hammerfest, Porsanger, Sørøya, and Vardø.

DIS - Salten is in Bodø, but their web page is only available in Norwegian.

Lappmarklag - an organization for descendants of Sami immigrants in the US.

Johan I. Borgos is from Vesterålen in Nordland. It has lots of useful information on Norwegian genealogy. In addition, his web page has a map and a list of all of the farms in Vesterålen, as well as a list of all of the bygdebooks from Vesterålen!

Leif Joh. Andersen has a wonderful web page with genealogy information, pictures, and links to Lofoten.

Pål Andre Jørgensen's Home Page with genealogy information from southern Helgeland (Sømna, Velfjorden, Brønnøy, Vefsn, Alstahaug and Tjøtta). (In Norwegian only)

Christmas Witchcraft is from the University of Tromsø and discusses witchcraft in Finnmark in the 17th century.

Jarle Pedersen has a searchable database of over 20,000 persons from Sørreisa, Dyrøy and Lenvik kommuner in Troms Fylke in northern Norway. You can search by surname: On the top line enter the first letter of the surname, and on the second line enter the second letter of the surname. It will display the full name, date of birth ("født" - abbr. "f.") and place of birth.

Troms genealogy by Tami Jensen is a very nice web site about genealogy research in Troms. It features detailed maps of the entire fylke, a list of over 60 researchers with thier corresponding parishes of research, information about each parish, and many helpful links.

Emigranter fra Kvæfjord via Trondheim 1867-1925 - from the web site of Jan Ove Askautrud is a transcription from the emigration list from Trondheim showing emigrants from Kvæfjord in Troms. (In Norwegian, in three columns: 1. Navn = Name, 2. Alder/Fødselsår = Age/Year of birth, 3. Ref.Nr. = Reference Number in the Emigration list).

Trond Ballo has a very nice web page with information about emigration from Alta and Vadsø in Finnmark.

Håvard Johnsen is researching ancestors in Nord Trondelag and in Nordland. (His relatives come mainly from these places: Spillum and Klinga in Namsos, Sømna, Fosnes; Homstad i Overhalla; Bersaas i Tingvold, Gausdal, and Nesna).

Lapland Ancestry (Large file: 173KB) is the family history book of Solveig and Rudolph Johnson.

Genealogy / Slekt in Finmark, Norway Karen Redd from southern Utah has created a fantastic resource web site for Finnmark genealogy research!

Hammerfest Information has lots of information about the world's northernmost city, including some old photographs of Hammerfest, information about the Royal And Ancient Polar Bear Society, and the Hammerfest Historical Society.

Hammerfest Historical Society collects and preserves information and objects of historical significance to their local community. It also works to increase interest and knowledge of local-history and cultural preservation in the area of former municipalities Hammerfest and Sørøysund.

The Green Arctic web site has lots of information about Nord Trøndelag, Nordland, Troms and Finnmark!
