ANCESTORS FROM NORWAY - Norwegian genealogy and immigration history

WELCOME TO
ANCESTORS FROM NORWAY

This web site is dedicated to my great- great- great- grandfather Daniel Olson who, in 1832, purchased the Føllesdal farm and began using the Føllesdal farm name as his surname. It is my hope that the information and the links presented on this website will help you in your search for ancestors from Norway.

This website was created in 1996 to provide a road map to various Internet resources on Norwegian - American genealogy. Since then, Ancestors from Norway has grown to over one hundred separate web pages, and now contains several original articles on how to trace your Norwegian ancestors, as well as numerous links to genealogy-related web sites in Norway and the U.S.  The articles you will find on this web site provide detailed information on how to use various Norwegian genealogy sources such as census records, church records, and "bygdebøker". In addition, there are several articles that provide background information on such topics as the Norwegian patronymic naming system.
The Internet offers a tremendous opportunity for Americans who are seeking their ancestors and relatives in Norway, and for Norwegians who are trying to locate the descendants of Norwegian immigrants in the US.  Newsgroups, mailing lists, and e-mail provide excellent means of increasing contact between Norwegians and friends of Norway around the world. While the Sloopers, who left Stavanger in 1825 bound for the New World, took more than ninety days to reach New York, the Internet now connects people across the Atlantic in a matter of seconds. It has never been easier to acquire the knowledge that the Norwegian - American novelist Ole Edvart Rølvaag (1876-1931) spoke of so eloquently many, many years ago:

It is vital in all cultural life to maintain a link between the present and the past. If there is anything that history makes clear it is this, that when a people becomes interested in its past life, seeks to acquire knowledge in order better to understand itself, it always experiences an awakening of new life.

Ole Edvart Rølvaag
