This booklet was made possible by the joint efforts of all the families that sent in their family data and especially the ones that suggested that I should collate all the information that we had.
Without the help from Mrs. E. L. Northway, Mrs. Stanley (Lois) Patterson, Richard J. Northway, Pamela A. F. Priest, and many others, it would have been impossible.

This latest information was located by Mrs. E.L. Northway of Denver, CO and by Richard J. Northway of Royal Oak, MI. (He found Land Records of Farmington, CT, for heirs of George for 1746 & later. Also the WILL of James Northway (#6) which gave us his children and allowed us to now add about 35 families.)
Note: The right to vote, by males of age 21 & over was given in the 14th Amendment in 1868 but this was reduced to age 18 by the 27th Amendment in 1917.
Therefore, I believe that in Colonial Days a male had to be 21 years old to be considered an adult.
If this is true, then George Northway must have been at least 21 years of age when he joined the Church in 1695 or born before 1675. That was the year that William Palmer was killed in what is now known as New Bedford, MA
This date is also before the time that John Norway arrived in Boston on Nov 4, 1679, so if this is the John Northway that married Susannah BRIGGS Palmer, they could not have been the parents of George, as reported in "Some Descendants of John Northway of Portsmouth, RI" by Carlton A. Palmer, Jr.
Research to locate the parents of George NORTHWAY (#2)
Different Northway Family Genealogists have given me the following dates for the birth date of George NORTHWAY who married Hannah NORTH in 1705: Born in 1640; 1650; 1660; 1673; 1675; & 1684.
(No proof has been found for any of these dates)
The following dates are for Northway, (Norway, Norwey) passengers who came to America in the 17th Century.
(1) There is a reference to a "John Norway" arriving in 1635 supposedly on the ship "Assurance". Ref. Holmes-Corey-Nov 10, 1970. He was not listed in J. C. Hotten’s "List of Emigrants to America" 1600-1700 Pg. 110-111.
(2) John NORWAY 1638 by Georg Munifie, Merchant, arrived in Virginia. Ref. "Early Virginia Immigrants" 1623-1660 pg. 43, by G.C. Greer & was supposedly in "Passengers for Virginia"- 1635 by H.C. Somerby Vol. 5, pg. 61 (Not Verified)
(3) Henry Norway 1638 of Milton Wilts was bound to Robert Haskins, Mariner to serve 6 years. Ref. "The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1660" item 454, by Peter Coldham.
(4) John Norway arrived in Boston on the ship "Hannah & Elizabeth" sworn to by John Richards, Commissioner - Nov 4, 1679 Ref. "Passengers to America" pg. 168, by Michael Tepper.
(5) I also have a note that George may be the son of Benj. Northway (Bro. of Oswald) who came to America from Burnet, Eng. in 1638.
(No verification has been found)
We thought that we had found something in an application to a National Society that gave the date for John & Susannah’s marriage as Sept. 21, 1677. However, the proof never materialized i.e., from the data listed as proof:
a. Dictionary of Rhode Island, by Austin, page 26.
b. Suffolk MA Court; Vol. Court Files 278; Vol. 1, Pg 102
c. Early Virginia Records. (John Northway & Thomas Northway mentioned Tho. Northway case in court about a house they built.)
d. "Early VT Records" show John & Thom. Northway purchased land".
Remarks:
a. Austin did not list the first name of NORTHWAY, nor a date.
b. Suffolk Court Records listed under that reference "a free school in Dorchester and dated
Dec 7, 1657". (Ref. 88-05)
c. Unable to find anyone to research this, to date.
d. "Earliest English speaking people settled in Vermont in 1724 so it seems unlikely, if not impossible, that your ancestor purchased land in the 1600’s.

Note: Over twenty five years of research has found no evidence that George Northaway was ever in Rhode Island. Lois E. Patterson of Marietta, NY, a noted genealogist and also a descendant of Lt. Samuel Northway, found the earliest proven connection of the BRIGGS & NORTHWAY families, as follows:
John (b. 1609-d. 1690 & Sarah (CORNELL) Brigg’s second son Thomas (brother to Susanna) was b. ?; d. 1720) & Mary (FISHER) Briggs, whose 4th dau. Hannah (b. 1 May 1676) married Benjamin DYER. Their son, Benjamin & Margaret (CLAPP) DYER had a son named Benjamin DYER of Simsbury, CT (b. 23 Jan 1747; d. 1815) who m. Anna NORTHWAY of Farmington on 4 Oct 1781 and his brother Daniel DYER (b. 1749; d. 1814) m. Sarah NORTHWAY in 1774.
