James E. Barnett, 58, a prominent member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary Church in Canandaigua, died Monday (April 21, 1986) at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua after a long illness.
Mr. Barnett, who lived on West Lake Road in Canandaigua, Ontario County, was to retire next month after 42 years with Burroughs Corp.
"Jim was probably one of the most outgoing individuals I probably ever knew," Carl H. Colcord of Canandaigua, a long time friend who worked with Mr. Barnett in the Knights of Columbus, said today.
"I don't think you'd find Jim getting into any situation when he wouldn't seek out a stranger and welcome him to any club or organization," Colcord said.
Mr. Barnett held many offices in the Knights of Columbus and was to be a delegate to the organization's convention next month at Kiamesha Lake in the Catskills, his wife, Corrine Barnett, said today.
He was a trustee of the Knights and past grand knight. He was also former faithful navigator, 4th degree; former vice president of the Finger Lakes chapter; and a former district warden.
Mr. Barnett was an active member of St. Mary Church in Canandaigua, and served on the committee overseeing the church's renovation. He also was a eucharistic minister for seven years. In that role, he often visited the nursing home at F.F.Thompson Hospital, administering Communion to patient, Mrs Barnett said.
"He was concerned about his church and about other people,"she said."He loved hid Lord. and everybody loved him."
"He was a deeply religious man,"Colcord said, "He was the epitomy of somebody you'd be proud to know and have as a friend. He was a close friend to everybody he knew, both in business and personally.
" Mr. Barnett was a native of Buffalo, but he grew up in Irondequoit and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Mrs. Barnett said.
While he was still in high school he began working with the Burroughs Corp. in Rochester. In 1963 he transfered to Geneva, Ontario County. He was an electronic field engineer with the company and planned to retire next month, his wife said. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Barnett and his wife, the former Corrine Merkel, were married in 1950. The couple moved from Irondequoit to Henrietta in 1959. Four years later they helped organize the Henrietta Volunteer Ambulance Corp., Mrs. Barnett said. The Barnetts moved to Canandaigua in 1965.
Mr. Barnett is also suvived by four sons, James M Barnett, Thomas J. Barnett and Danial J. Barnett, all of Canandaigua; four daughters, Patricia Kierst of Gorham, Ontario County; Suzanne Bruen of Stanley, Ontario County; Connie Ealey of Morin Heights, Quebec; and Nancy Reily of Manlius, Onondaga County; a sister, Theresa Root of Osteen , Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at McElwee-Fuller Funeral Home, 200 Buffalo St., Canandaigua. A prayer service will be held tomorrow at the funeral home. It will be followed by a Mas of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary Church, 95 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Canandaigua.
