George R. Allen servedhis country in the United States Navy. He enlisted on February 1, 1944 in New York City as an Apprentice Seaman and was sent to Camp Lawrence in Great Lakes, Illinois for basic training. He wrote almost daily letters to his wife and baby daughter and missed them very much. George went on to serve at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was honorably discharged on September 18, 1944 after achieving the rank of Seaman Second Class and returned home to his family.
