I have only been able to trace my
Shepherd family tree back to that of my grandfather,
Alexander Smith Shepherd. I have acquired a copy of his
birth registration indicating that he was born 10 May
1878 but listing only his mother - Jane Smith, and
indicating her mother's name, Jean as the name of the
person reporting the birth. His marriage registration
dated 26 Dec 1900, to Helen Matilda McCallum, indicates
his father was James Shepherd, occupation joiner. It also
indicates that both parents, James and Jane, were
deceased by 1900. I can find no record of a marriage
between James and Jane from which I would have hoped to
get an indication of their parents. Jane appears to have
also born 3 other boys, James Smith b. 21 Dec 1868, John
Lobban Smith b. 9 Apr 1871 and George Smith b. 26 Jul
1873. I have the birth registration for the latter 2 and
each indicates "Illegitimate" and offer no more
clues than that of Alexander. What I also have is a copy of the 1881 census showing as living at 4 Back St., Huntly, Aberdeen: Jane Smith 44 unmarried, washerwoman, b. Cairnie, Aberdeen; James Shepherd 12; George Shepherd 8; John Shepherd 4; and Alexander Shepherd 2. Then on the 1891 census living at 3 Upper Kirkgate, Huntley, Aberdeen: Jane Smith 54, washerwoman; George Smith 17, tailor's apprentice; and Alexander Smith 12, scholar. Why she changed reporting their last name from Shepherd to Smith I do not know, but they are obviously the same family. As noted, at the time Alexander married, he referred to himself as Alexander Smith Shepherd. James Shepherd was presumably still alive about when Alexander Smith Shepherd was born, i.e. 1878, but would appear not to be living with Jane at the time of either 1881 or 1891 census. He was presumably old enough to father a child, James, around 1869. However that could have him being born anywhere from 1800 to 1854. At least with Jane I have an age on the 1881 census of 44 placing her birth year between 1836 and 1838. I have found only one Jane Smith on the 1851 census for Aberdeenshire that fits the 1836 - 1838 timeframe, but have no way of confirming if this is the correct Jane. That Jane was listed as 13 when the 1851 census took place, but indicates she was born in Kincardine Oniel, rather than Cairnie. I have found a James Shepherd b.22 Aug 1841 in Huntley whose parents were a James Shepherd and a Mary Bannachie. That James is shown on the 1881 Huntly census as living with his widowed mother Mary at 10 Chapel St. Huntley. He is shown as age 38 and unmarried. His occupation is shown as "master carpenter" which could be a fit with "joiner" as shown on Alexander Smith Shepherd's marriage registration. I have his death registration as 4 Aug 1884. Can anyone help me locate the connecting link, assuming that this James Shepherd was indeed the father of Alexander Smith Shepherd. Alexander Smith Shepherd and Helen Matilda McCallum had 9 children so there must be a fair number of descendants by now. |

Ezekiel Sheppard, bn 1813 in Washington Co, PA. Suspected parents are Joseph and Sarah. Little is known about Joseph and Sarah, although it is quite likely they may be descended from Thomas Shepherd, founder of Shepherdstown. Ezekiel md Delilah Hewitt in Preston Co, WV (VA then) in 1840 and by 1850 was living in Ritchie Co, WV. He served in the 6th WV Inf Volunteers, Co D. as a 1st Lt. along with his son Charles (private) and nephew Charles Hewitt (private). He is reported to have been a Magistrate or JP in Clay Co for 9 years. He and Delilah had several children and both are buried in Ritchie Co Cemetaries, although not together. My line goes from Ezekiel Sheppard to son Ezekiel A Shepherd to son Benjamin Shepherd to my father Warren Douglas Shepherd (Sr). |
