The last of these family pictures shows significant changes. Most importantly, Thomas is holding an open book. Is this a sign that he is no longer illiterate, that Almira has taught him to read? Sarah's hair is now smoothly pulled back from her face, in imitation of her mother, and secured by a ribbon. Almira, too, is wearing another dress, doubtless made by herself, as is Sarah's. Thomas, in a show of affluence, is wearing a new suit, of more modern cut.
