The second in the series of pictures Thomas sent to his mother in Yorkshire. Now wearing a beard, his lovely vest discarded for a more practical and warmer one, perhaps made by his wife, all three stare straight at the camera, their heads held immoveable by the invisible clamps. Sarah, perhaps 3 or 4, is sporting the fashionable pantalettes, her short hair carefully curled in ringlets for this special occasion. Her shoes, an expensive item in this family living on the edge of poverty, have copper toes to prevent scuff marks, and they are little girl's shoes, not the sturdy boots boys might have worn. Perhaps Almira's figure has grown matronly; she has a new dress, immaculate in its simplicity.
