Thomas is still wearing his lovely vest. The first of a series of photographs taken to send overseas to his mother, we see Almira (he called her Mary, pronounced with a long "a") standing gaunt and spare in the lovely dress which was probably her wedding dress. Sarah's chubby cheeks were undoubtedly a source of pride in this family which had known hunger, and where they could only hope their children would survive to adulthood. Almira's clever fingers had sewn all their clothing, perhaps even Thomas's suit. The vest, however, he had before his marriage.
