PORTRAIT OF SARAH (COWGILL) BINNS

~~~*~~~
When Thomas Binns arrived in Canada, the first of his siblings to arrive, he had no large family to help him as a new immigrant. We don't know why he ended up in the Maitland area of Ontario where he sought work as a farm laborer. He found a place with the Jones family there. He missed his mother most of all, and the album of Binns family portraits starts with Sarah (Cowgill) [Hutchinson] Binns, born 20 May 1804,second daughter of James Cowgill, a weaver, and Margaret Snowden, his wife.
She married first John Hutchinson, who soon died. When she married George Binns, she brought her seven year old daughter, Jane Hutchinson, to the marriage, and Jane was accepted as an equal sibling by her Binns children. With George Binns, she had seven more children, of whom Thomas was eldest.
