ADMINISTRATORS & CHIEF MAGISTRATES OF NORFOLK ISLAND - 1913-1958+

Under the provisions of the Administration Law 1913, the executive Government
of Norfolk Island was, during the absence of the Governor of NSW, vested in
an Administrator, who was also Chief Magistrate, appointed by the Governor.

When the Norfolk Island Act 1913 came into force on July 1 1914, Norfolk Island
was accepted by the Commonwealth of Australia, as a Territory under its
authority.  From that date all references to the "Governor" were to be read as
references to the "Governor-General"

In 1936, the Administration Law 1913 was repealed and the judicial duties of
the Chief Magistrate were divorced from the duties of the Administrator.

Appointments of Judges and Magistrates of the Territory are now made by the
Governor-General under and by virtue of the provisions of the Norfolk Island
Act and the Judiciary Ordinance 1936. (As amended)
