Good morning Hugh, I have 2 box files with information about the Brothers PRide. I did my family tree some time ago and my ancestors were on board that ill fated trip. There names were Helem. Thanks for the McMillan info you sent me. All I am after at this stage is to find out what happened to Lillias Ellen McMillan born 8.9.1878 in Hokitika. She has just disappeared, no marriage, no death for her.
I have just concentrated on my branch of George Sandiland McMillan and was just doing marriage partners and death dates of George Sandilands brothers & sisters.

I am interested as to where you fit into the McMillan family. I am married to Gordon McMillan, son of Jack Gordon & Bertha McMillan. You have obviously had contact with someone in George Sandilands family to know the details you have. The reason I am saying that is because you have two of Gordons siblings down as the names they were known as, not their birth names.

Hi Hugh,
Up until a few years ago 5 Merry Street was the famous Robb's Restaurant and
bakers shop.
My parents had their wedding reception there in 1942 and also their Silver
Wedding in 1967.
The building is still there but other businesses occupy the space once used
by Robb.
It was considered very high class and indeed, the standard of bakery goods
was the best in town (once Jock Duncan moved up to South Queensferry, he had a
bakery further down Merry St on the opposite side, next to the Burns
Tavern).
Robb's was at the start of Merry St, which ran from Motherwell Cross up to
Carfin.
I will scan in a picture, (although it isn't the best quality) and send it to you. It shows Robb's quite clearly.

The very sad news was spread around town this morning of the sudden death of Mrs R McMillan. Mrs McMillan gave birth around midnight to a son, and apparently both mother and baby were doing well. About six oclock this morning, however, Mrs McMillan was seized with violent spasms. Mr MacAndrew was immediately in attendance, but although everything possible was done, within an hour the patient has passed away. The blow is a very serious one to her husband,who is left with a family of eight children. the eldest about twelve.
Mrs McMillan, who was about 35 years of age, was known to a large circle of friends in the Kumara and Hokitika districts. She was an excellent wife and mother with a heartiness and cheeriness that won the friendship with whom she was brought in contact. The sincerest sympathy is expressed with the bereaved husband, and the news of the death caused a gloom in town that day.

Lanarkshire,
also called LANARK, former county and historic region of south-central Scotland, roughly coinciding with the basin of the River Clyde. Bounded on the south by Dumfriesshire, on the east by Peeblesshire, Midlothian, and West Lothian, on the north by Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire, and on the west by Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, it had an area of 837 square miles (2,168 square km). Since the reorganization of 1974, it is largely included in Clydesdale, Monklands, Motherwell, Hamilton, and East Kilbride districts, of Strathclyde region.
Lanarkshire probably became an administrative region during the reign of David I (1124-53). The county was the scene of several notable episodes in Scottish history. The Scottish nationalist William Wallace attacked the garrison at Lanark in 1297. In 1568 [Index] Mary, Queen of Scots, and her supporters were defeated in the battle of Langside (located in Lanarkshire); this defeat led to her flight to England and imprisonment.
The battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge (both in 1679), between the Covenanters and government forces, also took place in the county. Rapid industrial development began in Lanarkshire in the middle of the 18th century; it was accelerated by the discovery of large iron deposits in the 19th century. The county was in the forefront of the struggle to improve the lot of the working classes. In the early 19th century Robert Owen conducted his influential social-welfare programs at his cotton mills in New Lanark.

Departed from England on the 25th of July 1863 Arrived Lyttelton on the 10th of December 1863 When it arrived at Lyttelton it was flying the Yellow flag indicating Yellow Fever on board. 44 of the 371 immigrants on board died. The ship was placed in quarantine on arrival and was that way for quite some time. I believe it got mentions in parliament at that time.

Compare : ISTG Brothers Pride The passenger list was printed in The Lyttelton Times on the 8th than again on the 10th so this accounts for some of the variation in the surname spelling. e.g. Bewton / Banton, Beel / Bell, M'Lennan / McTennan. The total cost of passage money to the Provincial Government for the majority each single man and woman was £13 and 6 shillings.

The Lyttelton Times Thursday, December 10, 1863
On Tuesday last we briefly noticed the arrival of this vessel at the heads, and although we possessed the information since proved to be too true respecting the amount of sickness aboard, for the sake of friends on shore we refrained from publishing the melancholy intelligence that 44 deaths occurred during the passage. In our columns will be found a list of the sufferers, as well as a number of births. We hear that Captain Sproul, on boarding the vessel, was refused the charge of the ship, and the offer of the pilot to place his boat and crew at the service of the ship to obtain fresh supplies for the sick children was also refused. On Tuesday evening the anchor was raised, and sail made before half a gale wind blowing from the S.W., and at daylight next morning the vessel was out of sight. She returned yesterday morning when off Camp Bay, and was immediately ordered to hoist the Yellow Jack. This peremptory order of the Health Commissioner not appearing to suit this cavalier officer, in two or three hours the anchor was again up, and with the assistance of the light breeze from the N.E., the Brother's Pride was brought up just astern of the Lancashire Witch. We presume the authorities will not permit their orders to be set at defiance, and the law treated with contempt.

On Tuesday last we briefly noticed the arrival of this vessel at the heads, and although we possessed the information since proved to be too true respecting the amount of sickness aboard, for the sake of friends on shore we refrained from publishing the melancholy intelligence that 44 deaths occurred during the passage. In our columns will be found a list of the sufferers, as well as a number of births. We hear that Captain Sproul, on boarding the vessel, was refused the charge of the ship, and the offer of the pilot to place his boat and crew at the service of the ship to obtain fresh supplies for the sick children was also refused. On Tuesday evening the anchor was raised, and sail made before half a gale wind blowing from the S.W., and at daylight next morning the vessel was out of sight. She returned yesterday morning when off Camp Bay, and was immediately ordered to hoist the Yellow Jack. This peremptory order of the Health Commissioner not appearing to suit this cavalier officer, in two or three hours the anchor was again up, and with the assistance of the light breeze from the N.E., the Brother's Pride was brought up just astern of the Lancashire Witch. We presume the authorities will not permit their orders to be set at defiance, and the law treated with contempt.

Coming from Elbeuf/Caen on the N.138 follow Avenue Des Canadiens right down to the roundabout. Take fourth exit into Rue Stanislas De Jardin, and the cemetery lies 150 metres on the left.
If coming from station Rive Gauche, Gare St Sever, follow Quai D'Elbeuf, Quai Jean Moulin, Quai Cavelier De La Salle into Avenue Jan Rondeaux, Av. De La Liberation, Bd. Du 11 Novembre to the roundabout. Take first exit into Rue Stanislas De Jardin, and the cemetery lies 150 metres on the left. St. Sever is part of Le Petit Quevilly.
The first CWGC signpost is just when you get to the entrance of the cemetery.
Historical Information: During the 1914-18 war British camps and hospitals were placed on the Southern outskirts of the city; a Base Supply Depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were established at Rouen.
The Hospitals at Rouen remained there in almost all cases for practically the whole of the war. They included eight General, five Stationary, one British Red Cross and one Native Labour Hospitals and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these Hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to St. Sever; and in September, 1916, it was found necessary to begin an Extension.
There are now over 3,000, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site.

Lanarkshire,
also called LANARK, former county and historic region of south-central
Scotland, roughly coinciding with the basin of the River Clyde. Bounded
on the south by Dumfriesshire, on the east by Peeblesshire, Midlothian,
and West Lothian, on the north by Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire, and on the
west by Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, it had an area of 837 square miles
(2,168 square km). Since the reorganization of 1974, it is largely included
in Clydesdale, Monklands, Motherwell, Hamilton, and East Kilbride districts,
of Strathclyde region.
Lanarkshire probably became an administrative region during the reign
of David I (1124-53). The county was the scene of several notable episodes
in Scottish history. The Scottish nationalist William Wallace attacked the
garrison at Lanark in 1297. In 1568 [Index] Mary, Queen of Scots, and her
supporters were defeated in the battle of Langside (located in Lanarkshire);
this defeat led to her flight to England and imprisonment.
The battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge (both in 1679), between the
Covenanters and government forces, also took place in the county. Rapid
industrial development began in Lanarkshire in the middle of the 18th century;
it was accelerated by the discovery of large iron deposits in the 19th century.
The county was in the forefront of the struggle to improve the lot of the working
classes. In the early 19th century Robert Owen conducted his influential
social-welfare programs at his cotton mills in New Lanark.
THE BROTHERS PRIDE I believe made several trips to New Zealand.
The Trip we are aware of is as follows.

When it arrived at Lyttelton it was flying the Yellow flag indicating
Yellow Fever on board. 44 of the 371 immigrants on board died.
The ship was placed in quarantine on arrival and was that way
for quite some time. I believe it got mentions in parliament at that time.

Lanarkshire,
also called LANARK, former county and historic region of south-central
Scotland, roughly coinciding with the basin of the River Clyde. Bounded
on the south by Dumfriesshire, on the east by Peeblesshire, Midlothian,
and West Lothian, on the north by Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire, and on the
west by Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, it had an area of 837 square miles
(2,168 square km). Since the reorganization of 1974, it is largely included
in Clydesdale, Monklands, Motherwell, Hamilton, and East Kilbride districts,
of Strathclyde region.
Lanarkshire probably became an administrative region during the reign
of David I (1124-53). The county was the scene of several notable episodes
in Scottish history. The Scottish nationalist William Wallace attacked the
garrison at Lanark in 1297. In 1568 [Index] Mary, Queen of Scots, and her
supporters were defeated in the battle of Langside (located in Lanarkshire);
this defeat led to her flight to England and imprisonment.
The battles of Drumclog and Bothwell Bridge (both in 1679), between the
Covenanters and government forces, also took place in the county. Rapid
industrial development began in Lanarkshire in the middle of the 18th century;
it was accelerated by the discovery of large iron deposits in the 19th century.
The county was in the forefront of the struggle to improve the lot of the working
classes. In the early 19th century Robert Owen conducted his influential
social-welfare programs at his cotton mills in New Lanark.
THE BROTHERS PRIDE I believe made several trips to New Zealand.
The Trip we are aware of is as follows.
Departed from England on the 25th of July 1863
Arrived Lyttelton on the 10th of December 1863
When it arrived at Lyttelton it was flying the Yellow flag indicating
Yellow Fever on board. 44 of the 371 immigrants on board died.
The ship was placed in quarantine on arrival and was that way
for quite some time. I believe it got mentions in parliament at that time.
