Hi Hugh,

I believe that the Railway Tavern was at Wareside as the other places on the same district number were on the north east side of the town, Widbury Farm etc.

There was a railway line that ran from Stanstead Abbots to Buntingford with a station at nearby Mattock Farm which is on the same census place.
Taken from Old Ordnance survey map of the area. Ware is my home town and I do have a 3 books on it.

Daphne.

My great grandfather, Joseph Winters was born in Millow near Dunton
in 1856. He was the only child of a Susan Winters. Susan and Joseph
moved south to Ware sometime before 1871 and stayed at Railway
hotel in Ware.

Have a look for bastardy bonds, also the local Poor Law Guardians; papers and church vestry minutes as Susan may have applied for; maintenance for the child.

This is not very likely to work. This is too late for bastardy bonds to apply (after 1834). There is also confusion over the source of poor relief - it was (pre 1834) dealt out by the Overseers of the Poor, not the church or vestry. The Overseers handled allowances for single mothers/their babies, collected from the father.
After 1834, ordinary poor relief came (ultimately) from the Board of Guardians of the Union of parishes, and was physically paid over by the Relieving officer. But this did not usually apply in filiation cases. There possibly could be a record of the birth in a workhouse. Not many Workhouse records for the Unions exist in the early years.

In any case, maintenance had to be applied for from the Petty sessions, so by far
the best source is newspaper reports of the proceedings of magistrates,
which could well name the father. The court proceeding should be reported in the local
newspaper within about 3 weeks of the child's birth - assuming that the
father was not careful and generous enough to pay up a lump sum without prompting, thus keeping his name out of court. If he paid something on account, or promised to pay and stopped doing so
after a while, then there could be a filiation case later, even after a matter of a
couple of years.

From Rob Newell

Hi Hugh,

Yes, Susan married my ggGrandfather, David Newell as his second wife. Take a look at my tree. I am not sure on the year of their marriage, but it was probably c1858 as they had a child c1859. I cannot help you with the background for Joseph Winters, but it makes family tree research very interesting ;-)

I am related to Susan and David's son George. He was a South Downs shepherd (Sussex, England) and so was my Grandfather, Clifford.

Do you live in Australia or New Zealand? My wife and I emigrated to California (USA) in 1977, and now live in Simi Valley, just north of Los Angeles. We sppent 28 years in San Jose, near San Francisco, before I was relocated with my job to Southern California.

Hi Hugh,

You mentioned your ggfather Joseph Winters as having involvement in the
Dargaville area.

Checked our database and yes we do have some references to him:

Marsden E/R 1881, address Whakahara, Residential, Farmer;

Rodney E/R 1887, address Aratapu, Storeman;

Auckland Directory Listings 1891-1899: Date 1892-1894, Millhand;

Also for Amelia Elizabeth WINTERS:

Harold, Beryl & Kids.

Old Mt Wesley Cemetery records; Died 23 May 1925 aged 62, Plot #A123
Birthdate about 1863.

Can send you the index reports if you like, can also lookup the
newspaper items and copy for you.

BTW you probably know Whakahara was just down river from Dargaville, on
the other side from Aratapu. Electorates for the area changed between
BOI, Marsden, (Rodney?), Hobson and Kaipara over the years.

Cheers,

Baron Aberdare

"The Baron Aberdare, a new ship, built to the order of the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in port last evening from London with a general cargo and a long list of passengers. Captain Edmonds reports that the Baron Aberdare discharged the pilot off Plymouth on the 14th December, and left the Channel with a fresh NE wind. Passed Madeira on the 19th. Experienced light winds, and crossed the equator in long 21 W. on 6th January. Had light SE trades and light variable winds afterwards. Passed the meridian of the Cape on the 4th of February. Fresh westerly breezes from there to the meridian of the Leeuwin, which was passed on the 20th February. Ran down the easting in latitude 40 deg S. After passing the Leeuwin had light easterly and NE winds. Rounded Tasmania on March 2nd, and since then have had a dead boat here. Two births on the passage, and one infant died. The ship made the run in 95 days from Plymouth. She is described as being a fine new clipper vessel of over 1,500 tons register, and it was confidently expected that she would make the premier passage of the season to this port, but contrary winds delayed her to a great extent. The immigrants have all arrived in excellent health, not an adult death being recorded by the surgeon superintendent, Dr Forman. The Health Officer (Dr. Philsom) and the immigration officer (Mr Ellis) will inspect the vessel this morning, when no doubt a clean bill of health will be given, as we understand that there is no disease on board of an infections character."

There is a Millow which is part of the village of Dunton ( about 3 miles
from Biggleswade Beds.) There were Winters living at Millow in 1881 but no Joseph.
Similarly 1891 and 1901. If you have some idea of his birth date it would help.

Hugh,
My grandparents (William & Caroline Rackham) emigrated to Karangahake
from NSW in 1905. My mother was born there and I lived there until 1963,
attending the Primary School with another 26 pupils. I am still a member
of the Paeroa & District Historical Society who have a museum in Paeroa
and a good collection of photos. I have a number of scanned photos of
the township. Contact me off-list with details of what you are
interested in and I may be able to help.

Good morning Hugh,

At long last we are able to do something for you after all you do.

Unfortunately, I can not contribute much but I can confirm that Thomas
George De RENZY was manager of the Waihi Goldmining Company,
which operated in the Karangahape during that time. He was from
England and married a Suzanne Bantock MASSON of Scotland.

(Just as an aside, he was my wife's grandfather, a short and very
egotistical person).

It is not of much value to you I realise unless you are putting together
material in general.

Best wishes

Dell Purdie

Morning,

the band rotunda went to Paeroa.

give glen Mayclair a ring and have a natter with him as he has much
knowledge of the area past and present. also photos. Glen is very interested
in the mining of the area at the time it was mined.

My parents lived there for a time.

Mr Montgomery was a church Minister, his wife ran the pub.

His Phone number is 07 863 7308 and he is home all this week(when not

Dear Hugh

What is it you want to know about this Waihi Gorge centre of gold mining? My
great grandmother was manager of Montgomery's Hotel in 1914 when my uncle
staying there on holiday sent a postcard to my mother, a view of the town.
The old school would have lost most of its pupils in the 1940s, much reduced
in size the building was still looking down on the small recreation area
which is the present day site of the non-existent town. My mother's younger
aunts remembered their time there, and seeing the boys off to the War. They
said the band retunda in Waihi was taken from Karangahake when the band was
no longer there to play.

Barbara Bolt.

Hi Hugh
The NASG Library if you are a member has a book on the School Reunion 1989,
which has some photos in, I didn't keep an original

If you don't get any better ones I can send you a copy.

There is a wonderful photo in the back of "New Zealand Yesteryears, Readers
Digest, showing a funeral in the main street 1875-1918, again I can copy if
you can't get the book.

My grandmother lived there in early 1900's, Eunice Phillipa Ludwig

Subject: Winters and Newell - a puzzle?

>*My gt grandfather Joseph Winters was born may 1856 at Langford,
>Bedfordshire
How do you know this is your ggfr? It is not an uncommon name,
>
>*Worked in Cambridgeshire as ag lab before coming to NZ in 1875

>*Died in NZ 1935 - death certificate and marriage certificate give dob as
>Ware, Hertfordshire
>
>Not sure why Ware given as birthplace
possibly he worked as an unmarried man in Ware, and had spoken about the
place to his family. Comes his death, it was not possible to ask him,
but someone said - oh, remember he was always going on about Ware - that
must be where he was born. But, on the other hand, see below.
>
>*Mothers name is listed as Newell on certificate
>
>*The name Joseph Winters is listed as father on marriage certificate
>
>A Joseph Winters and a Susan Newell appear on 1871 census at Wareside in
>Herts - Railway Hotel
>
>Trouble is Joseph is 44 - probably Josephs father?
It sounds as if we are talking about two generations
1. Joseph who married Susan Newell
2. Joseph, their son (or at least, Susan's son and Joseph's stepson, who
(maybe) later took his name.
If Susan had an illegitimate son named Joseph Newell in 1856 at Ware,
then bingo, you have him. In which case, his mother was a Newell, and
only the name of the father is in doubt - check local Petty session to
see if there is a maintenance case. Does Joseph here state he wasborn in
Langford? If so, this sounds likely, and look in that area for a
maintenance case, but presumably she soon moved to Ware.
>
>Susan Newell is listed as wife on 1871 census
is she listed as Susan Winters or Susan Newell?
> - Joseph is listed as son in
>law
>
>Head in census is David Newell is Susan his wife or Josephs?
ah, with you. If the set up is
David Newell head....
Susan Newell, wife
Joseph Winters, son in law aged 14 b Langford
then the child was born as Winters *(? illegitimately, ?of a short
lived marriage.)
Susan then married Mr Newell, but the boy retained his own surname,
because he was already known by it before Susan married David
The Joseph Winters aged 44 MAY be Susan's brother.

>Susan is still at Wareside in 1881 census but not 1891

I know why you thought of Dunton - found a Susan WINTERS there in the

1851 Census Index I reckon ..... but did you have a look at the
family?

Anyway the upshot is that Susan's maiden name was WINTERS, not NEWELL
that might have been Joseph's father's name; I know not for there I
found his baptism record in the PRs at Entry Number 567 on July 27th
1856; it says:
Joseph, Mother Susan WINTERS of Millow

No father's name given and Millow is a hamlet within the Parish of
Dunton.

Susan was at Millow in the 1851 Census with her father Samuel and
siblings Samuel, Thomas, Betsey and George.

I looked at every instance of both NEWELL and WINTERS in the County
of Bedfordshire and there were no other Susan's of either name.

Subject: Re: [BDF] Kelly's Directories 1877/1890

NEWELL:

Several entries for George Clayton NEWELL in Milton Ernest who was a baker [in 1877]; and baker and Registrar of B,M & D [in 1890]

Several entries for John NEWELL in Sharnbrook who was a shopkeeper [in 1877]; and baker & corn dealer and Registrar of B,M & D [in 1890]

In Wrestlingworth, Joseph NEWELL is listed as a blacksmith [1870]; Jacob NEWELL as a tailor [in 1890]; and Newell MUNGFORD [a grandson of Joseph?] is listed as a blacksmith [in 1890]

best wishes

"Ware
Ware is a typical Hertfordshire market town, with a population of around
17,780. It has a close community spirit, flourishing amongst its ancient
and modern streets. The Romans had a vital hand in establishing the
prosperity of Ware. They were not the first people to live in this area
though - archaelogical evidence of early Iron Age and possible Bronze
Age settlements has also been found.
The malting industry dominated the life of the town from the 17th
century and Ware could justly claim to be the premier malting town in
England. What gave malting in Ware the edge over other centres was its
position between London and the barley-growing counties of Suffolk and
Cambridgeshire,
*****together with its situation on the River Lea, with easy transport
by barge to London****.
The malting industry has now gone and many of the old maltings have been
converted into offices, factories and houses, but Ware still retains its
industrial character. The main employer is now pharmaceutical giant
Glaxo Wellcome, with other industries located in the Crane Mead,
Broadmeads and Marsh Lane areas."

Kelly's Directories 1877/1890

Hugh

Just a couple of entries that I can find :

1890 [only]

Potton...there is a George WINTERS, beer retailer, Bull Street,

1877 / 1890

Biggleswade...David Paine WINTERS, farmer, Stratton Park farm

Kelly's appears to list gentry, farmers/tradesmen and public officials but other people [who work for others] arent listed as a rule

I looked in the Muster Lists [Bedfordshire Muster Rolls, 1539-1831edited by Nigel Lutt, vol 71 (1992) £15] and found just one entry in there:
In Dunton cum Millo [in the Biggleswade Hundred]: William WINTERS was enrolled in the County Militia, he was chosen by lot in Feb 1763
