=========================================================================== An index of names from : Elizabethan Life : Morals and the Church Courts by Dr F G Emmison This is the sixth in my series of indexes based on Dr Emmison's books on Elizabethan Life in Essex. Although there are comparatively few genealogists whose research takes them back to the late 1500s, these books are a great storehouse of Elizabethan names in the county. They come from a time when the county population was no more than about 50000 (it has been estimated as 35000-40000 adults) so the indexes are a large sample of the population and may often indicate whether particular names were widespread, localised, or uncommon. See also my textfile ESS16C.TXT which is a general note on Dr Emmison's work in this area. In the nature of this book it is essential to make use of several abbreviations to save space, and I have based them on Dr Emmison's usage. PMI = pre-marital incontinence, EMI = extra-marital incontinence, "burnt" means to infect with venereal disease. Other obvious abbreviations are Bradwell(M) = juxta-Mare & the like. The book was borrowed from the library of Otago University. It has been indexed by Mike Foster of Wellington, New Zealand =========================================================================== ABBOT Katharine Romford, fianc‚ Robt Dewgard blew cold, 1589 151 ABBOTT Henry jnr E Colne, drunk and lewd, 1590 47 ABDALE Edward Terling, was struck by Jn Stephens 1590 123 ABELL Wallgrave Bergholt 1591 (Stephen Newton his svt) 163 ACTOR John Gt Horkesley sugeon, obliged to show licence 1580 319 ADAMS John Terling, lodged a wedding party 1589 12 ADAMS Mistress Colne Engaine, scold to her husband, 1587 66 ADAMS Revd E Colne vicar, c1589 159 ADAMS Thomas Lambourne, won claim to particular pew 1595 132 ADAMS Thomas Aveley, lighterman, must attend Aveley church 1580 85 ADAMS William E Colne vicar, married excommunicate pair 1598 307 ADDAMS goodwife W Ham, rumoured betrothed to Jn Eaton, he denied 149 ADDAMS Rev E Colne vicar 1591 9 ADYE Nicholas E Mersea, died 1588 or 1589 176 AILWARD William Gt Oakley, allegedly burnt by Joan Nele 1580 34 AKERSON John Kelvedon fuller, evidence vs Jn Yeoman, 1599 273 AKERSON John Kelvedon, tendered dues 1601 to Revd Thos Simpson 106 ALBOROUGH goodman Danbury, quarrelsome, disturbed neighbours, 1566 67 ALBOROWGHE Danbury, couple divorced 1566 (mutual fighting) 166 ALCOCK Wakes Colne, immorality alleged w Agnes Underwood 23 ALDERTON Geoffrey Ardleigh vicar, testified for Jn Almond 1576 293 ALEFOUNDER Edy Gt Holland, pin in buttocks during service time 118 ALESAUNDER Dorothy Barking, niece of Nick Weaver, incest charge 1564 39 ALESWAYE Anthony Colchester, abused rector Robt Goode 1588 209 ALISON Hornchurch, his wife named in Wylcockes case 1566 51 ALLEN John jnr Ardleigh, dismissed on EMI charge, 1599 296 ALLEN Robert Witham ch/wdn, parted Wm Chapman & his wife 1597 35 ALLEN Thomas E Colne, struck by Jn Reynolds 1582, bled 121 ALLEN Zachariah Gt Leighs, compurgator for Nicholas Want 1598 295 ALLETT Thomas High Laver, advised Alice Kynge to leave hsbd 1579 67 ALLISON George Coggeshall, missed communion 1581, had objections 104 ALLSAUNDRE Nicholas Barking, aka Weaver 39 ALMOND John Ardleigh, denied EMI w maidsvt Helen Sawye 1590 293 ALMOND John Ardleigh, maid in b/doom, suspected of EMI 1590 15 AMANS Alice W Ham harlot, 1565 320 AMCOTTS Henry Cranham, accused by maidsvt 1599, will 1607 55 AMIE John Hutton, in discord with svt Wm Robinson 1598 109 ANDERKIN John W Hanningfield, indebted, feared to go to ch, 1587 84 ANDERKYN Jasper Creeksea ch/wdn, accused as negligent 1572 237 ANDERSON Joan Maldon, m Wm 1579 thinking 1st hsbd dead 169 ANDERSON William Maldon, m Joan Carpenter "believed widow" c1579 169 ANNAND Gilbert Boreham vicar 301 ANOND Gilbert Boreham vicar, rejected persons fm communion 1575 104 APPLEFORD William Whitham, to repair part of chancel 1588 x tithes 252 APPLETON Robert Colchester, Middle Mill, supported Jn Gwye 1592 123 ARCHER Richard Lt Wakering vicar, penance for divers disorders 291 ARGENT John Purleigh, got Thos Strayte to lodge woman 1584 30 ARTESLOWE Edward Downham esq, kept unlicensed sch/mstr 1589 319 ARTHUR Giles Colchester St Giles, rates unpaid 1587 279 ASHEBIE Isabel Langdon Hills, EMI often with Revd Jn Goldringe 297 ASHEBIE Robert Langdon Hills, his wife admitted EMI 1589 297 ASHETON Edward Hornchurch, marr niece of 1st wife 1587, charged 42 ASHETON William Wennington rector, harangued court 1585 311 ASHETON William Wennington rector, deprived 1581 194 ASHLEY Joan S Ockendon, once betrothed to Richd Bateman 158 ASHPOLE Revd Peldon vicar 1597 ?
