Funeral Held For Mrs. Eliza Sykes
Music Adds to Impressiveness of Services Held Here and at Pisgah Church Near Greensboro
Interment in Pisgah Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza Ann Sykes, who died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her
son, Mr. W. C. Sykes, on Race Street, were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from
Pisgah Methodist church, near Greensboro, and interment was in Pisgah cemetery. The
service was conducted by Rev. E. J. Harbison, former pastor of Race Street church, this
city; Rev. A. L. Aycock, present pastor at Race Street; and Rev. Mr. Neese, pastor of
Pisgah church. Greensboro was the former home of Mrs. Sykes. She lived there until 1930
when she removed to Statesville.
A short funeral service was held from the Sykes residence here at 10:30 o'clock Thursday
morning, and immediately afterward. the funeral party left for Greensboro. The service her
was conducted by Mr. Harbison and Mr. Aycock.
Music added to the impressiveness of the services. During the service here a group,
composed of Misses Mary Cashwell, Claudia Williams, Mrs. C. A. Sykes and Messrs. Alex.
Cooper and Shelton Miller sang "It Is Well With My Soul." and Miss Mary Cashwell
sang as a solo. No Night There." During the service at Pisgah church the same group
sang "Some Time We'll Understand." Mrs. Shelton Miller was accompanist.
The grandsons of Mrs. Sykes served as pallbearers. They were Messrs. C. A. Sykes, W. C.
Sykes, James Sykes, Elmer Hutchinson, John Cole and Howard Rhea. The honorary pallbearers
were Messrs. B. B. Cockrell, C. F. Campbell, C. C. Privette, D. E. Kennedy, Alex. Cooper,
J. A. Fulp, W. L. Williams and E. W. Jones. Miss Mattie Stroud and Miss Claudia Williams
were in charge of the flowers, and these were carried by granddaughters. The floral
tribute was large and beautiful.
Mrs. H. P. May. of Asheville, a sister of Mrs. Sykes was here to attend the service. Dr.
Hugh May and Messrs. Charles, John and Ross May, of Asheville were other relatives
present. Others from the vicinity of Statesville attending the service were Mr. and Mrs.
W. M. Smith, of the Eufola community; Mrs. Robert Deal and Mr. Roy Deal of the county; and
Misses Mallie Perry, Margaret Bell and Miss Cain. The last three are members of the
Harmony school faculty, Miss Clara Sykes, granddaughter of Mrs. Sykes, being a teacher at
Harmony. The service at Pisgah church was attended by a number of friends from that
community.
