About "The Daniel"

Dan IRVING, like me, is another transplant from the cold and snowy Northeast to the milder, albeit wetter Puget Sound area. Dan, however, came by way of Southern California, and has many stories to tell about living in Greater LA. Some of those stories may even be TRUE!!!

For many years, Dan has been a Finish Carpenter and Cabinet Maker. He enjoys making furniture, particularly pieces of an "Arts and Crafts Movement" design. Dan built a computer work-station that has made me the envy of all the kids in my Play Group. Once he's out of the shop for the day, though, he fixes a de-caf latte and thinks about ... BUILDING WOODEN BOATS!!!

The first boat Dan built is called "T'Ellwycha". She is not particularly big - 12 1/2 feet - but she IS beautiful. She has a shallow draft and when the winds are too light for sailing, she can be rowed quite easily. "T'Ellwycha" has been to the Wooden Boat Show at Port Townsend (WA) many times; she always causes a lot of conversation on the dock - I'm never sure if folks are commenting on her attractive lines or Dan's sailing technique (which, to some, must look VERY scarey!!!)

Boat # 2, as yet unnamed, is "in progress". THIS boat is a 17 foot "Sharpie", and hopefully will have her "Champagne Launch" this summer.

DAN IRVING'S GENEALOGY

Dan IRVING's grandfather, Willard Venterlip ERVINE, was born in Round Pond, Lincoln County, Maine in 1873. In 1906, Willard married Sarah Elizabeth DUFFY, born in 1884, in New Brunswick. The marriage took place in Portland, and three children were born there. Then the family moved to Newton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, where five more children were born. It was in Massachusetts that Willard started using IRVING as his surname, causing NO END of confusion to later researchers!

Some other surnames from Dan's heritage are MUNRO, DOCKENDORFF, YATES, McFARLAND, RICHARDS, DELANO, DRAKE, SIMMONS and PABODIE. (How's THAT for a line-up of "heavy hitters"?)

IRVING/ERVINE GENEALOGY - ancestors of Willard Venterlip ERVING/IRVING - with an unproven "Mayflower Connection"

IN THE WORKS - a new Miss Marge Marple Minute Mystery, "Sadie, Sadie, Missing Lady" - why can't I find Dan's grandmother, Sadie DUFFY, in New Brunswick Censii?
