Does this line link with your "back to the 1500s" line? Thanks, Gary Warner ========================================================================== Hi Gary, Yes, we would be most happy to have you join us. You are right at the apex where we probably split off. The link is not yet established, and perhaps you may be able to help us establish it. We now have a number of the members of the New England branch, but are still heavily weighted on the North Carolina side. The establishment of this link is one of our 3 stated goals. In the mean time I want to send you the following which will help you in you pedagree and records. This is from the book about the Bundy family by V.Mayo Bundy. "The First American Bundys" "According to the Connecticut Historical Society, the first Bundy in America is said to have been one John Bundy or Bunde, who came from England before the year 1635 and settled first at Plymouth, Mass., whence he soon removed to Boston and later to Taunton in the same Colony. From Plymouth Colonial Records comes this entry, "At a court of Assistants held the VIth March 1635, wheras John Bundy stands bond by indenture to serve Griffin Montegue, carpenter, in New England, the full term of eight years from the 14th of March 1635, the said John Bundy acknowledged himself content to serve out the remainder of his term with Eilt Brewster, the Elder of Plymouth, who hath compounded with the said Montegue, his master." "At a Court of Assistants held the XXIth August, in the XIIIth year of King Charles, etc., "John Bundy was examined and found guilty of lude behavior in vicious carriage towards Elizabeth Haybell, in the house of Mr. and Mrs. William Brewster, and is therefore adjudged to be severly whipped, which was executed upon him accordingly." "On January 8, 1638 Mr. Brewster hath assigned over to Jonathan Brewster, his son, all his intrest and title into his service of John Bundy for the residue of his term, which is five years from the fourteenth of March next." "John Bundy, aged 64 or thereabout made his last will and testament on April 5, 1681 (probated October 29, 1681). By this time he owned land and a home. His will records the following children: By his first wife, Martha Chandler who died 5/1/1674 1. Martha Bundy, b. 2 Nov 1649 2. Mary Bundy, b. 5 Oct 1653. m. Edward Smith, b. 1648, d. 1707 3. James Bundy, b. 29 Dec 1644, d. 1721. m. Mary Briggs. 4. Patience Bundy, b. 27 Mar. 1665. 5. Sarah Bundy, b. 4 Mar. 1669 By his second wife, Ruth Gurney 1. John Bundy, b. 1677. 2. Joseph Bundy, b. 1679. 3. Edward Bundy, b. 1681. "It should be remembered that the punishment of John Bundy for "lude behavior" was typical of the treatment of some indentured servants, minorities, and political prisoners of this era. In spite of the proclamations of the founding fathers regarding freedom, religion, and democracy, their actions towards the poor, debtors, and the religiously unorthodox were a far cry from their affirmations. Unfortunately, the strong ofrten extended their strength over the weak. "If and wehen these two early American Bundys, John and William, are officially linked, their descendants will no longer be able to assign so-called "undesirables" to the other line. There are nationally and internationally known members in both lines as well as many oridinary Americans; indeed, we represent a good cross-section of American life." The above will provide you with the surname for Mary, and a lot of other good information. We hope it provides you with the desire to join us in our pursuit to link us together. You could be a valuable participant in performing this linkage and mergure. Looking forward to your reply. Best Wishes, Bruce Wood ============================================================================ As a result of the above correspondance, Gary Warner has decided to join our Bundy Group. Best Wishes, Bruce Wood __________________________________________________________________________ Bundy Post J2 ___________________________________________________________________________ Hi Troopers, I just this evening received the following message about the New England branch of the Bundy family. I am posting it here for all our benefit. I have written to Sherry to thank her but also to invite her to join us. She would be a real asset to our efforts to link together. Several of you also descend from this line. Would you write and email to her and tell her we need her? This could be a major breakthrough for us. Would one of you who nicely copied and pasted it into your message the last time repeat the process? I really need a readable copy for future distribution. I apologize for my inattention. It is in the Book Review Section. "Gentle Knife - William Bundy Dissects the Nixon Years, Politely" "Everyone in the state department is tryin to knife me in the back except for Bill Bundy," Henry Kissinger grumbled after becomin Nixon's National Security Adivser. "He is still enough of a gentleman to knife me in the chest." So true, even now. In his new book, "A Tangled Web: The Making of Foreign Policy in the Nixon Presidency" (Hill and Wang; 647 pages; $35), the patrician Bundy is still inserting the knife in a gentle, gentlemanly way. His title comes from Sir Walter Scott's lines about the "tangled web we weave When first we practice to deceive." In assessing Nixon and Kissinger, Bundy comes to the unsurprising conclusion that "the taste for acting secretly was obsessive" and that an "unshakable bent to deceive" undermined their accomp- lishments. "The prime example in Bundy's march through the Nixon years is Indochina. >From the secret bombing of Cambodia in 1969 to the secret assurances made to South Vietnam in 1973 that the U.S. would militarily enforce the Paris peace accords, Nixon and Kissinger showed that "deception goes hand in hand with bad policy," Bundy charges. "Perhaps. But Bundy, who oversay Asia policy at State during the Vietnam buildup, fails to wrestle with the sad irony that has dogged his career. It was forthright, honorable, well-bred folks - the best and brightest, such as William Bundy and his brother McGeorge - who unintentionally got us into Vietnam. It was secretive, manipulative folks - such as Nixon and Kissinger - who got us out. "Bundy's book is a valuable one, a solid chronicle from the vantage of the old foreign policy establishment. But it could have been so much more power- ful and poignant if he'd delved deeper int the murky questions about Vietnam that continue to gnaw at many of us, presumably including Bundy." -By Walter Isaacson ______________________________________________________________________________ Note: William Bundy and McGeorge Bundy here are direct descendants of John Bundy, all members of the New England branch of the Bundy family. Bundy Post NE-1 In the late 1500's, there was a community of English "refugees" who had moved to Leyden Holland seeking religious tolerance. It appears the James Chilton and his wife Susannah Furner (?) may have been among that group. In any case, the Mayflower records include James Chilton, Susannah, his wife, and daughter Mary. Records further state that he had another daughter, already married, that he left behind. James and Susannah both died shortly after arrival, leaving Mary an orphan. She went on to marry John Winslow. His will and and hers are published in detail in the reference cited below. In my next post, we will take up the ancestry of John-1, John Bundy of Taunton Mass. Bill Remington __________________________________________________________________ Bundy Post NE-2 A few days ago, I posted the Chilton-Chandler ancestry of John Bundy's first wife, Martha Chandler. After that, I got some mail encouraging me to number or otherwise, systematically identify the posts of the northern (or New England) descent of John Bundy of Taunton Mass. I do agree with this approach, as it simplifies referring to information in past postings. With this in mind, I am considering the Chilton-Chandler post as NE-1 (for New England) and this is NE-2. Since all of the posts will be NE, it will also make it easy for those of you with a more southern interest to set these aside. This post will deal with the currently known ancestry of John Bundy (John-1). John Palmer b. Eng before 1600, m. Audrey unk b. Eng, before 1600, parents of Audrey Palmer, b. Eng, m. John Bundy, b. 1597, Eng. (John Sr., or John-0), parents of, John Bundy, b. 1617, Eng (Nottinhamshire?) BTW Bruce Wood: Can you privately post me with Bundy posts J1, J2, J3, and J5 from your archive. (I can only locate J4). I plan to combine them with information from other sources and repost in the NE-n series. When I repost, I will make reference to the original posting numbers. Harman Clark has asked me for the sources for the information concerning John Bundy's (John-1) ancestry. It is quite approriate to ask about sources and Ipromise to do better on the future postings, to the best of my ability. I have to admit that these are not the best of sources, but my practice is to take ANY potentially credible information. I will use that information until I can personally confirm it, or until I find a source that appears to be better that is in conflict. This information is taken from two different web sites on Family Tree Maker: 1. Eileen M Jekins reports: John1 Bundy (her John1 is my John-0) was born abt 1597. He married Audrey Palmer. She goes on to report that they had a son John of Taunton b. abt 1616 in Nottinghamshire, England. This source gives me the ancestry, the birth for John-0, and the place of birth=Nottinghamshire. //www.familytreemaker.com/users/j/e/n/Eileen-M-Jenkins/GENE-0001.html 2. Virginia Larue Jennings reports: John1 Bundy was born 1597. He married (1) Daughter Palmer, daughter of John Palmer and Audrey. He married (2) Ruth Rachel. The she goes on to show the birth of John as 1617 Nottinghamshire. I do not know what kind of a name "Daughter" is. It does make me suspicious of the name Audrey for the mother of Audrey. This post shows the same parentage (except on first name for the mother). It show a similar birth date, and the same place of birth. The fact that two sources are showing similar info is encouraging, but certainly not conclusive. It is even possible (in fact likely, since it is the same gen service) that they got some portions of thier information from each other. Still, this is the best information that I have at this point. I will continue to include it in MY records until I have a reason to change. In the worst case, we can consider these as clues.... information that we can use to search for better quality information from better sources. I just looked at my latest post, and I realize that I forgot the web address for the Virginial Jennings info, so here it is: //www.familytreemaker.com/users/j/e/n/Virginia-Larue-Jennings/GENE2-0001.html Bill Remington ____________________________________________________________________ Bundy Post NE-3 Bundy Post NE-3 John-1 Bundy (Also post J1-5) This post will deal with the family(s) of John Bundy. "If and when these two early American Bundys, John and William, are officially linked, their descendants will no longer be able to assign so-called "undesirables" to the other line. There are nationally and internationally known members in both lines as well as many oridinary Americans; indeed, we represent a good cross-section of American life." _______________________________________ >From another source: John bundy of Taunton Mass. born in England 1617 and died between April 1681 and 29 Oct. 1681 the date of probate, aged 64 years. Father's name unknown- Mother daughter of John Palmer Sr. and his wife of Boston. John Bundy married Martha (prob. Chandler) . Circumstantial evidensce that she was a daughter of Roger and Isabella (Chilton) Chandler of duxbury and grand daughter of James and susanna chilton of the Mayflower. This source gives second wife as the widow Ruth Rachel or Ratchell Garney. This source is a document that came into my hands from Ramona Bennett. This is because the Bundy descendants of John-1 and Martha Chandler are Mayflower descendants. John and Martha had only 2 sons, James and Samuel. Little is known about Samuel. Perhaps he did not live to adulthood. John had other sons with his second wife, but little is known. In any case, their descendants would NOT be Mayflower connected. Per Mayflower 5-Gen (below): On 6 Jan 1690, James Bundy of Braintree sold land in Taunton. On 31 May 1703, James Bundy of "Narrigansett country near Point Judah," eldest surviving son of John Bundy formerly of Taunton, transferred land in Taunton. James Bundy of "Kings Town" cooper sold all rights to a house and land which had been his for 16 years, near Point Judith RI in 1719/20. In 1720, James Bundy of Kingstown gave to his son Samuel Bundy of Kinstown, laborer, part of his East Greenwich farm. On 15 Sept. 1721, James of East Greenwich sold to Samuel Bundy of East Greenwich, cooper, and Ebenezer Bundy of Preston Ct, Yeoman, all his land, houses, etc. in East Greenwich. Ebenezer Bundy transferred his share to his "brother Samuel" on 20 Nov. 1721. On 25 Nov. 1721, Mary Bundy, widow of James Bundy of East Greenwich deceased, and three sons of James --James, Samuel, and Ebenezewr-- appeared regarding an administrator. On 10 March 1721/2, Samuel Bundy, "son of the deceased," was appointed administrator of the estate of James Bundy of East Greenwich, cooper, The inventory was dated 8 Nov. 1721. In depositions on 30 Jan. 1730/1, Samuel Bundy aged 37 of East Greenwich and Joseph Bundy aged 30 of North Kingstown mentioned thier father James Bundy. Ebenezer Bundy deposed 31 March 1719 aged "19 years and upward" mentioning his father James Bundy. No evidence was found to prove that the following were also children of James as has been claimed: John, who married Lydia Smallbent; Lydia; Benjamin of Voluntown and poss. later of Stratford Ct; and Nathaniel, who married Mary Palmister. James married Mary (?). Several theories have been advanced concerning the identity of Mary, James' wife. Mayflower 5-Gen (below) makes no guess. My document (source Seattle Gen Soc April1957 Sept. 1959) says; "perhaps daughter of Richard Briggs. Virginial Larue Jennings (Familytreemaker web site) says, Mary (Briggs or Gardner), daughter of Henry Gardner or Richard Briggs. Proably just as well to show Mary (?). The reported children of James-2 Bundy (John-1) and Mary (?) include (* indicates those offspring authenticated by the Mayflower Society): *James b. ca. 1688, Mass, d. 1762 Preston, Ct. Fairfield Co. Ct. Dates of birth are taken from my document (source Seattle Gen Soc April1957 Sept. 1959). Dates of birth at the end of the four "validated" sons are taken from the Mayflower document (below), probably estimated from ages given in the court records. Note that these dates would yeild a different birth order. "Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Volume Two," published by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1978. I raise this question because this process works best if those of you with an interest will read and question, challenge, and further offer corrections. some of the errors that I report may be simple typos, or a mental lapse (as this was). The second dob. and spelling is from the web site of Virgina L Jennings who gives the marriage location as Massachusetts. The Mayflower 5 source (below) "finds no evidence that Lydia is the dtr of James" as we are listing her. I have no further information about Lydia or her children, but I do have an intriguing speculation: If these sources are all correct, then James Bundy had both a daughter and a daughter-in-law named Lydia. Now this may just be a coincidence, but I am always suspicous of these things. Note that John Bundy (Post NE-7) died in 1714/15 leaving Lydia Smallbent Bundy a young widow with a small boy (John). Then daughter (?) Lydia marries (about 2 years later) Ebenezer Jaquer. I have no evidence that this is the same person, but if there are 2 Lydia's then it is certain that there were two women named Lydia Bundy of marriageable age in 1716 or 1717 when Ebenezer Jaquer took his wife. I am anticipating that I will recieve much of the Seattle Bulletin information any day now. At that point, I anticipate a series of supplemental postings, updating these first 13 posts with information that I uncover there that may differ. I currently possess information on only 4 of the descendants in the fourth generation, but I am told that 12 children are documented in the Seattle Bulletin info. For those of you new to the BUNDY-L list, I am posting the information in my possession concerning the ancestors and descendants of John Bundy of Taunton in a series of posts labeled "Bundy Post NE-n." To date there have been 11 posts and a few "extras." I am maintaining a separate archive on thse posts so that I can bring new members up to speed on the NE information only. I am hoping that each of you will examine your records, and post back to the list as you notice differences, or discrepancies, or inconsistencies. To date, there have been very few such corrections. I cannot believe that I have not made any errors! If I can be of any other help, please contact me, on the list or off. In the message below, I have described the material. I am also introducing a coding system to ease the process of referring to these sources. PLEASE RETAIN THIS MESSAGE!!!!! In the future, expect to refer to these sources BY CODE ONLY. My next few posts will be supplements to the first 13, adding information as supplied from these sources. Bill Remington SOURCE OF THIS MATERIAL ----------------------------------------------- This material has followed an interesting route to come into my hands and the BUNDY-L list as we read in SGS-Bundy-June-1958: Publication is being sponsored by Mrs. Ida Judith (Bundy) Lett and her brother, Kingsley D. Bundy, of Portland, Oregon, who have taken this means of perpetuating the family records accumulated by their aunt, the late Miss Cora Adaliza Bundy of St. Ansgar, Iowa and left at her death to her sister Mrs. Edna May (Bundy) Edmondson who died at Gresham, Oregon, May 24, 1957. This brought the information into the SGS bulletins. In response to my eralier request, Jeanne Boschi wrote to me: Several years ago, a long-time BUNDY researcher (Clifford N. Abbott of Newmarket, NH) sent me photocopies of the following pages from various Seattle Genealogical Society bulletins. (See 1-6 below). Jeanne copied the material and sent it on to me at her own expense. We are all grateful to you Jeanne! Thanks a lot! She even noted that the handwritten notations were additions made by Mr. Abbott. I will note those as they show up in future reports. THE SGS BULLETIN PUBLICATIONS --------------------------------------------------- The first five were apparently Compiled by George Lawrence Allen of Alstead N.H. and edited by Mrs. Harold L. Adams. Pleae retain this message. I will refer to data taken from these records by the code that immediately follows the number such as “SGS-Bundy-June-1958” for number 2 below. 1. For these 8 source, I will use the code only. Bill Remington _____________________________________________________________________ -------------------------------- Bundy Post NE-3-Supplement SGS SGS-Bundy-April-1957 There is no startling new information about John Bundy to be found in the SGS material. What we do have is a lot of interesting detail: In his will, written April 1681, he called himself “John Bundy, Senior, aged 64 years...” which seems to be a further validation of the existence and ancestry of John Bundy Jr., son of John and his second wife Ruth Gurney. The fact that John’s first wife was Martha Chandler is proven by two circumstantial methods: 1. His son James was likely named for great-grandfather James Chilton. Likewise, the names Martha, Mary, Sarah, Patience and Samuel appear in both the Roger Chandler and John Bundy families. 2. Quoting directly from the source: The identification of John Bundy’s first wife is concurred in by Frederick C. Warner, in an article in the American Genealogist, January 1951. On 3 Oct. 1665, the court granted 150 acres of land “lying between the Bay line and the boundaries of Taunton” [now Easton] to the three daughters of Roger Chandler. The three Chandler sisters never used or personally disposed of their 50-acre grant; disosition was made by their children, as shown by the following records, which provide identificaton of the sisters as ... Martha, wife of John Bundy ... In 1681 John Bundy willed land in North Taunton Purchase to his son James, this being the 50 acres granted to Martha Chandler Bundy. John Bundy was apparently a carpenter: The first known record of John Bundy in America is dated 14 March 1635 (he would be 18 yrs old), when he entered into an agreement with Griffin Montague of Boston-Brookline, for 8 years as carpenter’s apprentice [Plymouth Colony records, 1:51]; on 6 March 1636 John Bundy acknowledged himself as content to serve the remainder of his term with Elder Wm. Brewster, who in 1638 assigned over Bundy’s service to his son Jonathan Brewster. We have record of the marriages and offspring of only two of John Bundy’s 9 (10?) children, James and Mary. But we do have evidence that two of John’s other sons survived to manhood: John Jr., eldest son of the second marriage is mentioned in the Roster of First Military Co. of Taunton, on 30 May 1700, at which time he would have been aged 22-7-24 [see S.E. Hopkins’ Hist. of Taunton, p.353]. His brother Joseph, also shown on that same date in the First Military Company of Taunton, is mentioned on p. 171, History of Brookfield: “Alarms were frequent in this year, but no general appearance of the enemy. Not less than eighteen men in service as soldiers, part of the citizens, during the summer and fall.” Joseph Bundy’s name is in that list, dated 30 October 1706, at which time he was within 2 months of 28 years of age. In a handwritten notation (by -----) there is note of a tenth child, the third born to John and Martha: Sarah b. 4 March 1658 d. 4 March 1658 ________________________________________________________________ Bundy Post NE-14 Hello This information is quoted from a compendium of stories about the history and life in Mesopotamia,OH which I obtained from the general store in Mesopotamia in Oct.,1998. " Bundysburg Gets its Name. In 1816 after a long, toilsome journey by ox-team and wagon through snow and flooded rivers, Ephriam and Moses Bundy came from Massachusetts into the beautiful hilly southeast corner of Mespo Township. They were amazed to find here their own brother, Elisha, whom they had not seen in years. He had arrived a short time before with Jacob Gates, grandfather of the G.L. Gates and French families.Moses Bundy and Wareham French built a sawmill in the Bundy settlement in 1820. Horace Horton, grandfather of Winifred Clark, built and operated a factory for cutting out wooden bowls. It may be that many of the old wooden butter bowls we treasure now as antiques were made by the Hortons in Bundysburg."
