Parents of John and William Thames

Topic Two
DNA shows that John Thames to be a Descendant of Thomas Thames

Topic one

Thanks to the work of Cheryl Aultman, another item has been found that could tie John and William Thames to Thomas Thames. Cheryl found a Southern Claim Commission-Claim #1643 that William had a brother in Alabama that was killed on account of his Union sentiments. Below is a copy of tht claim.

May 26, 1871 Claim appears to be for $404.00 but $299.00 was amount eventually paid on this claim to William Thames.

William Thames, Clayton County, GA February 7, 1877 Southern Claims Commission "William Thames being duly sworn & being examined by the Special C----(cannot read word) says that during the late war he lived in Clayton Co. GA at the same place where he now resides & where he has resided for the last 40 years past & that he was never in the state of Mississippi in his life & never during the war had any transactions either by himself or through an agent or agents with the Confederate Government or any of its officers or agents or the officer or agent of any state Government in rebellion against the United States. He further deposes that he never at any time during the war sold or offered to sell to the Confederacy or any of its officers a wagon or wagon and two mules or any other number of mules receiving $810 for the same. That he had no sort of transaction or trade in any way directly or indirectly of this character & absolutely knows nothing about such a thing. He further deposes that he had a brother living in the state of Alabama before & during !
the war & who was killed there on account of his Union sentiment, that this brother had a son whose name was William Thames & that this is the only Thames of that name he ever knew of. He also had some kinspeople who moved to Red River in Louisiana or Arkansas in the year 1817 but of whom he knows nothing nor does he now know where they are or their names, whether there was a William Thames among them or not but deponent distinctly & positively knows that he had no such transaction during the war as that alleged. He never had any transactions with the Confederacy of any sort during the war.

(signed) William Thames Sworn to & subscribed before me at Atlanta GA February 7th 1877.

Notes of Transcriber: William Thames claim had been reviewed and records were found where someone of this name had sold a wagon & 2 mules to the Confederate Army in Mississippi during the war. The U.S. Govt. was denying William Thames' claim on this basis and he was trying to argue his case & have his claim accepted.

Addendum to THE THAMES FAMILY OF NORTH CAROLINA
Circa 1735 to 1850
Written by Walter S. and Maxine C. Gabennesch November 15 in the year of 2006

Thomas who married Nancy Tolar 13 April 1805 Bondsman Jno Jackson, witness Robinson Mumford, was the son of Joseph & Martha and is shown above. This was his second marriage. We assume his first wife, who we cannot as yet identify, died. We have no further record of this Thomas and Nancy while they were in NC.

The Thomas Thames with wife named Nancy in Twiggs Co. GA during the 1813 - 1825 period is this Thomas. Thomas was a member of the Bladen Co. NC Militia and therefore officially a "Revolutionary Soldier". No grandson of Joseph and Martha (Newberry) Thames was old enough to be RS. Their son Thomas was very probably a member of the NC Bladen Co. Militia beginning in about 1780. Cheryl Aultman has found the following information in a bound volume at the archives of Washington Memorial Library in Macon, GA recorded on page 7 "Stone Creek Primitive Baptist Church minutes 1813 April 4, Received by letter Thomas Tims & Nancy his wife, also James Jessop and Dorcas". Cheryl also found this marriage bond information, James Jessop married Dorcas Simms NC Marriage Bond dated December 14, 1808. I have the will of Isaac Simms, which shows his daughter Dorcas married a Jessop. In my opinion this ties Thomas & Nancy of Twiggs Co. GA to NC. I have no doubt that the letter presented for transfer was from the Cape Fear Baptist Church where they all were members. Thomas very probably died in Twiggs Co. GA in the middle 1820's.

1813 (Hollingsworth Collection & History of the Stone Creek Baptist Church) Thomas Thames, Nancy Thames and Mary Thames are shown as being members of the Stone Creek Baptist Church of Twiggs County GA.

1827 GA Land Lottery Nancy Thames resident of Twiggs Co. as a widow of a Revolutionary Soldier draws land in Lee County GA, Section 1, District 26, Lot #99. She is the only Thames/Thomas living in Twiggs County that receives land in this lottery. The latest a person could serve and be considered a RS was 1785.

1833 December 9, Nancy Thames (no further record)
Department has Executive order directing that name of Nancy Thomas, W.R.S. (Widow Revolutionary
Soldier) Bostick's Dist., (Twiggs) county GA, drawer of lot # 99, 26th Dist., Lee county, be changed to
Nancy Thames W.R.S. Executive Department December 9, 1833. 1 p.

Nancy Thames would not be eligible for a pension under the "RS Pension Act of March 18, 1818 because she married Thomas after 1799.

Cumberland Co. D.B. 16, page 156, 500 acres Ayspice (Espies Creek) 1797; John Theames, Martha Theames (this is Martha Jr) and Jesse Theames to Joseph Theames executed on 23 July 1795. Why didn't Thomas and Samuel own any part of this inherited land? Was there a property division made that is not recorded?

"Why did Martha, Thomas, Martha (daughter), John, and Samuel decide to sell the property inherited from Joseph in his will of 1780 at this time, "6 May 1799"? Was this the only property that Thomas received from the estate? Martha, John and Samuel sold additional inherited property December 20, 1799. Why didn't Thomas sign off on that deed? Did Thomas take his entire inheritance in one sale? Was the 400 acres (minus the exempted 50 acres) sold 6 May 1799 Thomas's share? It would be no problem for any of the Thames family members to have a house in which Thomas and family could live. Joseph had well over 2000 acres of property, about 1/3 of it in Bladen County. Was land, perhaps still in Bladen Co., sold which Thomas owned an interest and it was not recorded?

As of October 15, 2007 we can name in order of birth the four sons of record of Thomas Thames. Samuel Thames born before 1790, Thomas J. born 1792, William born 1796 and John born 1799. Cheryl Aultman proved these sons when she procured a claim William Thames of Clayton Co. Ga. made to "The Southern Claims Commission" naming John Thames of Bibb Co. Alabama as his brother.

THIS LARGE BRICKWALL MAY HAVE BEEN BROKEN

Yes it happened thanks to DNA

results--see below

John Thames born abt. 1800(based on the census records) in Cumberland County, North Carolina and died January 1865 near Jemison, Shelby County, Alabama.

Recent findings based on DNA results (see Family Tree DNA on the web http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thames-Timms-TimsDNAProject/) show that decendants of John Thames have the same DNA Haplotype R1a as the Thomas Thames Family Modal Haplotype.

John Thames's census records say he was born in NC but no information has been found by NC researchers that this is true. The following descendant tree of Thomas Thames shows the people with the DNA Haplotype the same as descendants of John Thames. This information would indicate that John with the same DNA would be a descendant of Thomas.

25 of those tested had identical test results. Their family trees all lead back to Thomas Thames b 1710.
