Research Notes for Joseph N. Endicott

Goal

We have proven that Joseph N. Endicott and Rachel E. Keese were the parents of Robert Varner Endicott and Sarah/Sadie J. Endicott. Our goal is to determine which of the various known Joseph Endicotts was Robert V. Endicott's father.

According to the Randolph Co., Arkansas, record of their 1883 marriage, Joseph and Rachel were 22 and 21 years of age, respectively. From this, we know that we're looking for a man born 1860/61.

Joseph N. Endicott and Rachel E. Endicott were divorced 6 May, 1897, in Butler Co., Missouri. This establishes their location during this timeframe and confirms that the Rachel E. Endicott who married John R. Harper on 23 May, 1897, in Butler Co., was Joseph's ex-wife.

This is significant in that it tells us that the Robert V. Endicott who appears in the 1900 St. Francois Co., Missouri, census in the household of Robert R. and Rachel E. Harper is Joseph N. Endicott's son. In this enumeration, Robert's birthplace is Arkansas and his father's (Joseph's) is Indiana.

Prime Candidate

Of the several Joseph Endicotts and Joseph N. Endicotts who were born in Indiana and within a couple years of 1861, our best candidate seems to be Joseph Nation Endicott, eldest son of Martin Van Buren Endicott and Martha Jane Williams Smiley.

In the 1870 enumeration, Joseph's birthplace is listed as Illinois, but the 1880 enumeration shows he and his next oldest brother, George, were born in Indiana, whereas the younger siblings were born in Illinois.

Assorted Joseph Endicotts

Joseph (E.) Endicott, Harris Co., Texas

The 1930 census shows a Joseph Endicott who is an age match for Joseph N. Endicott. The date of his first marriage is approximately the same as that of the Joseph N. who married Rachel Keese; however, Eunice has her first marriage age listed as 21, which suggests that she and this Joseph were one another's first marriage.

Further discrediting this Joseph as a match is an entry in the Texas death index, which shows Joseph Edgar Endicott, who died 26 Oct 1957, in Harris Co., Texas (cert #55548). Along with this record is another for Eunice Amie Endicott, who died 5 September, 1950, in Harris Co., Texas (cert #43656)
