HESSE FAMILY PAGE

Julius Caesar Hesse was born in Brilon, Westphalia, Prussia on April 10, 1830. His mother Ursula Hesse died 3 days later. His father is unknown. With the help of church records in Brilon we have traced Ursula's family back 3 generations to Georgius Hesse in 1717.

Julius was adopted by some unknown family and brought up in Brilon. On May 28, 1854, Julius Caesar and Gertrude Guntermann were married in the Katholische Kirche Sankt Petrus und Andreas Brilon. That same year they emigrated to America, arriving in New York City on August 14, 1854 on the ship Landwurden from Bremen; destination Indiana, where Gertude's brother John Guntermann lived. Traveling with them was Gertrude's brother Stephen Guntermann. Source: Germans to America,Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S.Ports, 1850-1855, Vol 8, Ed. Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby.

The 1860 Census lists Caisar Hesse (age 30) with wife Gertude (age 30) and three daughters, Pauline (5), Mary (3), and Catharine (1). They were living in the Louisville 4th Ward. Caisar's occupation is given as "Laborer" and the place of birth for both his wife and himself was Prussia. The daughters were all born in Kentucky.

In the 1870 census, Caisor and Gertrude are keeping a boarding house. Catharine, 11, is still at home and has been joined by 5 brothers, John (9), Lewis (7), Stephen (5), Bertha (Peter) (2), and Henry (9 mos.).

Julius is listed in Caron's Louisville Directory for 1871, as a saddletree maker, r. 304 8th, corner Broadway.

Gertrude died in April 1878.The 1880 census shows Caisor and 6 boys (John, Lewis, Stephen, Peter, Henry, and William). It also includes a listing for 2 of the boys, Henry and William, living with their uncle, John Gunterman(n), in Oil Township, Perry Co.Indiana. Also living there was Gertrude's brother Stephen Gunterman(n).

Julius married a 2nd time, around 1885, to Mary Magdalena (Lena) Mastein Hoegner.
