Mrs. Lydia Nichols

Everyone in Shinglehouse and vicinity was grieved to learn of the death of Mrs. Lydia Nichols, which occurred at her home on Lincoln avenue in this boro at 9:55 Wednesday morning, March 27, following a stroke of paralysis she suffered four weeks previous. From the first her condition was grave and nothing that loving hearts and tender minds or medical skill could do, availed and she gradually failed until the summons came.

Lydia Warner was born in Bingham township, Potter county, March 11, 1846, and was the last of a family of seven children. Her entire life was spent in this county. She was united in marriage to Willard Alonzo Nichols of Sharon township on October 6, 1868. They resided on a farm a mile east of Shinglehouse until 1900 when they moved to this boro and bought a home. Mr. Nichols died in 1914.

She was a member of the Methodist church and lived a good Christian life, a dutiful and loving wife and mother and a kind and considerate neighbor and friend. She was a great homebody and took great pride in her home. She was of an unselfish nature and her thoughts first and last were always for others. Lydia Nichols will be much missed in the family circle as well as in the community.

She is survived by four children, Arad F. Nichols, Benjamin F. Nichols and Mrs. Myrtie J. Lewis of this boro and Earle Nichols of Sharon township., thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The funeral was held in the M. E. church at two o'clock Friday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. F. G. Andrus of Greenwood, N. Y., a former pastor here, officiated, assisted by Rev. T. S. Alty. The Mesdames R. M. Babcock and H. C. Chamberlain, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Ethel McGregor, sweetly rendered three hymns. There was a profusion of beautiful floral offerings.

The interment was made in the family lot in Maple Grove cemetery. The bearers were Enos, Howard and Wayne Nichols, Harold Lewis, Lee Bixby and Monroe Burdic. Hunt, Morton had charge of the funeral.
