"Richard
Nichols: The Immigrant", by George Nichols, 1928, in Shinglehouse,
PA. The family arrived in Ipswich, MA around 1640, then moved to Reading,
MA, ("History
of the Town of Reading, Mass., by Hon. Lilley Eaton, 1874") where they
stayed until before the Revolution, when they moved first to Worcester,
MA, and then to Dummerston, VT. After the war, they settled in Bainbridge,
NY, where they lived until 1843, when Benjamin Nichols, his brother Maleck
Adel Nichols, and one other brother, followed the timber industry
to Sharon Center, PA (near Shinglehouse). After the timber started to give
out, one of Benjamin's sons (Arad Freemont Nichols) moved to Wisconsin,
where he continued in the lumber business. Willard Alonzo Nichols farmed
for a while, and then when the glass factory opened in Shinglehouse, became
a shopkeeper. When the store burnt down in 1913 he went back to farming.
