You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html -- they will be returned to you without going to the list. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to Winchell-L-request; you must use [email protected] instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

My name is Mary D. Taffet; I am the former list administrator for the Winchell-L and Winchell-D surname lists. To contact the current list administrator, write to [email protected].
My lineage:
Robert Winchell & wife > Nathaniel Winchell & Sarah Porter > Stephen Winchell & Abigail Marshfield > Stephen Winchell & Mary Rouse > James Winchell & Mary Ferguson > Mary 'Polly' Winchell & Josiah Hollister (my Winchell line stops here, but continues on with Hollister > North > Mathews > Boice, etc.)
The Winchell family comes from England. Robert Winchell immigrated to Dorchester, Massachusetts, circa 1634. From there he went to Windsor, Connecticut. He died in Windsor in 1669. It appears that the Winchell family in America must all be descended from this one immigrant. There may very well be other Winchell immigrants, but I know nothing about them. If you do, please let me know.
A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records (I don't have any examples of this for Winchell). In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled (I don't have any examples of this for Winchell). Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled (I don't have any examples of this for Winchell).
Known variants of the Winchell surname include:
If you know of other surname variants, please send them to me at [email protected], with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
Please send an e-mail to me at [email protected] if you wish to have your immigrant Winchell (or surname variant) ancestor listed here on this page.
