If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to McCLOSKEY-L-request; you must use [email protected] instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

I am the listowner for the McCLOSKEY-L and McCLOSKEY-D surname lists. My name is Mary D. Taffet, and you may contact me at any time for help should you need it. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I cannot promise an immediate answer, but I can promise an answer within a day or two.
My lineage:
Archibald McClosky & Mary Kelly/Skelly > Delia McClosky & Frank Bemis Dresser (my McClosky line ends here, but my Dresser line continues)
I learned on 08/25/2004 from a 1938 obituary for one of Archibald's daugthers that Archibald McClosky was "a cousin" to Cardinal McCloskey, though the exact connection was never stated.
The McCloskey family comes from Ireland. Most McCloskey's lived in Derry, primarily in Dungiven, but also in Londonderry.
For a thorough history of the origin on the McCloskey family in Ireland, take a look at McCloskey Irish history on The McCloskey Clan website:
A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records (I have seen members of the same family referred to variously as McCLOSKEY, McCLOSKY, McCLUSKEY and McCLUSKY). In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled (I don't have any examples myself, but I know it happened). Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled (This must have happened in my own line, because all lines were originally McCLOSKEY, but our line in Canada is known most often as McCLOSKY).
Known variants of the McCLOSKEY surname include (in alphabetical order):
If you know of other surname variants, please send them to me at [email protected], with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
Please send an e-mail to me at [email protected] if you wish to have your immigrant McCLOSKEY (or surname variant) ancestor listed here on this page.
