Thomas McWhirter

(1804-1867)

Thomas McWhirter [db#25891] was born in Ireland in 1804. He married there to Sarah (or Eliza Jane) ? [db#25892]. At least four (4) children were born in Ireland before the family removed to the United States.

In the 1860 census of Middlebury, Addison co., VT Thomas appears as the head of a family including his wife "Sarah" and sons, James [db#14470] and George [db#25893]. Two pages away is the listing for Thomas’ son, Samuel [db#14469].

Almost nothing is known about Thomas as he died 4-Feb-1867 leaving only a small trace of his life recorded in America.

Thomas McWhirter’s children include:

....Samuel McWhirter [db#14469] was born in 1836 in Ireland and is first recorded in the United States in the 1860 census of Middlebury, Addison co., VT with his wife Almira. He married Almira Hastings Blake [db#25877]. On 30-Aug-1862 Samuel enlisted with his brother James in Company E of the 14th Vermont Regiment. He was mustered in 21-Oct-1862 and mustered out 30-Jul-1863. During this time the Regiment fought at Gettysburg. Samuel appears as head of family in the 1870 census of Derby, Orleans co., VT with wife and infant son Harry Blake McWhirter [db#25878]. Almira died in 1871 and Samuel in 1874 leaving Harry to be taken in by Almira’s younger sister Eleanor and her husband Charles S. Barrett in PA.

....Margaret McWhirter [db#26695] married 26-Jul-1865 in Middlebury, Addison co., VT to Archibald Stewart [db#26696].

....James H. McWhirter [db#14470] appears first, age 17, in the 1860 census of Middlebury, Addison co., VT living with his parents. He enlisted with his brother Samuel in Company E, of the 14th Vermont Regiment and served while the regiment fought at Gettysburg. James appears in the 1870 census with his mother Sarah, but his whereabouts thereafter remain a mystery.

....George McWhirter [db#25893] was born 27-Apr-1846 in Ireland and is listed as age 14 in the 1860 census of Middlebury, Addison co., VT where he is living with his parents and brother James. George married Ellen Annette Sleeper [db26697] and died in 1883 in Watertown, Middlesex co., MA.
