Samuel McWhirter
of Saratoga co., NY
(1824-1909)

According to his death certificate Samuel McWhirter [db#1859] was born in Scotland although 3 census records say he was born in Ireland. His father is listed on the certificate as John McWhirter [db# 24944], place of birth, Ireland. The space on the death certificate for Samuel’s mother’s name is left blank, and even her first name is not yet discovered.

Samuel is said to have removed from co. Antrim, Ireland to South Glens Falls, Saratoga co., NY after 1850. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in Warren co., NY on 20-Oct-1859 and indicated at that time that he came to the United States "before he was 18 years of age". That would place the time of his arrival before 14-Feb-1852.

He married Rebecca Lowes [db#24943]. Since all their known children were born in NY, it is unclear whether they were married before or after Samuel immigrated to NY.

In the 1855 New York State census Samuel is listed as a laborer in a saw mill. He bought a home on Fourth Street in South Glens Falls, Saratoga co., NY on 7-May-1872. In his will dated 5-May-1908 and probated 9-Jul-1910 he left the house to his son Samuel McWhirter Jr. [db#1860]. He left other property, both personal and real, to a daughter Jane [db#20535]( "Mrs. Jane Lavoy") and another son Clifford V. McWhirter [db#1724].

Samuel McWhirter’s children include:

....Sarah Ann McWhorter [db#24946] lived only 10 years. She was born in Warren co., NY according to the 1855 NewYork State census. She is listed in the 1860 Saratoga co., NY census as "Sara Ann".

....Jane "Jennie" McWhorter [db#20535] was born in 1855 in South Glens Falls, Saratoga co., NY; married there in 1876; died there in 1909; and, is buried in the South Side cemetery there. Jane is listed in the 1860 census of Saratoga co., NY as "Mary J. McWhirter". She married Charles Augustus LaVoy [db#20536]. Jane’s daughter, Nellie LaVoy [db#20538], modeled for artist Douglass Crockwell and she appears on the front cover of the 28-Jan-1933 issue of The Saturday Evening Post.

....Ellen "Nelle" McWhirter [db#27541]married Erving D. Simmons [db#27542], a civil engineer.

....John McWhirter [db#24945] died at the age of 2 1/2 and is buried in Rice cemetery in Glens Falls, NY.

....Samuel McWhirter Jr. [db#1860] was left the family home in the will of his father dated 5-May-1908. Samuel married Harriet Root [db#27544] and is buried in Glens Falls cemetery in Warren co., NY.

....Barbara B. McWhirter [db#24947] died at the age of four and is buried in Rice cemetery in Glens Falls, NY.

....Clifford V. McWhirter [db#1724] was named as a beneficiary and executor in the will of his father dated 1908. He married Aletia Woodward [db#1725]. Clifford is listed in the 1914 City Directory of South Glens Falls but disappears with his family thereafter.
