Books

Descendants of Helena Ligon and Hugh McWhorter - prepared by Virginia McWhorter Freeman - This looseleaf book (117 pages + index) is updated annually in June. It traces the descendants of Hugh McWhorter (1788-1825), great-grandson of Hugh McWhorter of New Castle co., DE, and his wife, Helena Ligon (1793-1853) who were married 25-Jan-1810 in Clarke co., GA. The book is not currently available.

Descendants of David McWhirter & Mary Posten – Patricia Lynn Petitt (3 Volumes) - Volume I offers background history on the McWhorter family, complete with information on David (b. c1741 in PA) and Mary McWhirter (the progenitors of the family), Bible records, deeds, wills, newspaper obituaries, photos, genealogies and biographical sketches. The descendants of John McWhorter (son of David and Mary) and his wife, Elizabeth Willson, can be found in this volume. A fullname index is provided for each chapter of genealogy. Volume II is devoted to the children of David and Mary McWhirter; the family of Hugh and Jean McWhorter of New Castle; with additional documentation, Bible records and photos.  Volume III contains over 300 McWhorter letters (written between 1830 and 1999) that the author has transcribed, footnoted, and referenced to descendants. This volume also includes facsimile reprints of original documents that were kept with the letters, such as Civil War orders, Civil War furlough papers, medical degrees (from the early 1800s), Patent records for soap (1800s), and much more! This massive 3-volume set is enhanced by numerous photographs of descendants and significant places. Dr. Pettit is a member of The Society of Lees of Virginia, The Fairfax Historical Society, and the Historic Centreville Society. This 3-volume set is available from Heritage Books.

Descendants of Moses McWhorter and Related Families - compiled by Anna Harman Bowman, All Printing Co., Oklahoma City, OK. 241 pages including index and photos. Primarily about the descendants of Moses McWhorter (cir1700-cir1756) of Lancaster co., PA. This book is not known to be currently available.

Free Frank - A Black Pioneer on the Antebellum Frontier - by Juliet E. K, Walker, 1983, The University Press of Kentucky, 223 pages. This is the story of the writer's great great grandfather Frank McWorter, born a slave in South Carolina in 1777 who died  a free man in 1854 in a town he founded in western Illinois. During his lifetime he worked to purchase the freedom of sixteen members of his family at a cost of nearly $14,000. This book is generally available from most of the major bookstores including Amazon.com & BarnesandNoble.com.

Edited and Printed by Mr. and Mrs. E. R. McWhorter of Longview, Texas 1978. 224 pages including index. Primarily about the descendants of David and Mary. This book is not known to be currently available.

History of the McWhirter Clan - compiled by Mrs. Ethel Smith Keim, August 1937, published by Walter Printing Company, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. 63 pages - no index. Some Descendants of William McWhirter (1748-1823) and Jane Barr (1756-1836) of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania primarily through son William McWhirter who married Mary McChesney. This book is not known to be currently available.

History of the Henry McWhorter Family of New Jersey and West Virginia - by Minnie S. McWhorter, Charleston Printing Company, Charleston, West Virginia 1948, reprinted by Higginson Book Company, Salem, MA 1996. 248 pages - no index. The story of Henry McWhorter (1760-1848) who married Mary Fields (1761-1834) and settled along Hacker's Creek in present day Lewis co., WV. A "facsimile reprint" was listed recently in hard-cover for $39 plus $5 for shipping and handling from the Higginson Book Company 148-GH Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970 or phone at (508) 745-7170 or e-mail at ([email protected]).

George McWhorter, Sr. and Descendants of Union County, North Carolina (1735-1988) - compiled and published by Mrs. Frances Richardson Small and Mrs. Mary Tyson Starnes, printed by Direct Quick Copy, Inc., Monroe, NC 1988. 189 pages including index. George McWhorter, Sr. (cir1735-abt1805), thought by some to be a son of Moses McWhorter of Lancaster co., PA, married Elizabeth Walkup and raised his family in Mecklenburg co., NC. This book traces some of the lines of descent to the present. This book is not known to be currently available.

Exits and Entrances - by Ura McWhorter Byars. 139 pages - no index - 1974. Primarily concerns the descendants of Aaron Elihu McWhorter (1814-1880) (son of Moses Allen McWhorter, Jr.) who lived and is buried in Lawrence co., AL. The book is thorough concerning 19th and 20th century descendants but is quite unreliable and speculative when speaking of 18th century ancestors. This book is not known to be currently available.


Articles

"Henry McWhorter" (Chapter XXVIII) of The Border Settlers of Northwestern Virginia from 1768 to 1795 - by Lucullus Virgil McWhorter, originally published in Hamilton, Ohio 1915, reprinted by The Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc, Baltimore, MD 1975, reprinted for the Clearfield Compay, Inc. by the Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD 1991; p. 274 - 295. Recollections of the early McWhorter family of West Virginia descended from Henry McWhorter (1760-1848) who married Mary Fields (1761-1834). Henry removed from Orange co., NY to Harrison co., VA (now WV). The book is presently available from Lost In Time, PO Box 634, Burtonsville, MD 20866; (http://www.lostintime.com).

"McWhorter Family History" by Dennis Peterman, Phelps County Genealogical Society Quarterly, Phelps County, Missouri Genealogical Society, Rolla, MO, Volume 3, #2, April 1987, p. 14. Descendants of a John Pinkney McWhorter (said to be a son of a Levi) who removed from Tennessee to Texas co., MO before 1850.
