.John McWhorter of Washington co., NY
(1739-1813)

[Since the date of publication of this article and register report NEW information has come to light that adds much to the story of John McWhorter [db#73] of Greenwich, MA and Washington co., NY. Readers should be sure to refer to the article and register report on John's father, John McWhorter (cir1695-1768) of Greenwich, MA, to obtain a clear picture of this family.]

I
n the lineage books of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) two different versions of the origins of John McWhorter [db#73] are given. By one account [DAR Lineage Book, Vol. 55, p.154] John was born in Brookfield, MA and enlisted in 1777 as a Sergeant in Captain McCamley’s company, Colonel Hawthorne’s regiment of New York Militia. In the second account [DAR Lineage Book, Vol. 113, p. 199] John was born in Scotland and served as a sergeant in 1776 in Colonel Josiah Whitney’s regiment and as a 2d and 1st lieutenant, 1777, in Colonel Thomas Marshall’s Massachusetts regiment. A third Revolutionary War service scenario suggests that he may have been the John McWhorter of Greenwich, MA who served in Captain Joseph Hooker’s Company of Minutemen, Colonel Ruggles Woodbridge’s Regiment which on 20-Apr-1775 responded to the Lexington alarm.

What seems to be agreed upon by researchers is that John married a Bethiah Hall [db#74] and by 17-Nov-1786 he was living in Hebron, Washington co., NY when his son Samuel [db#77] was born. By 1790 he was living in Granville, Washington co., NY where John "Whorter" is listed in the census as the head of a family consisting of 3 white males16 years or older, 1 white male 15 years or younger and 6 white females.

In 1807 John removed from Granville in Washington co., NY to Warsaw, Gennessee co. [now Wyoming co.], NY. He settled in the south part of the village on part of lot 36. Four of his daughters, Polly [db#78], Jenette [db#460], Patiance [db#76] and Chloe [db#261]; a son Samuel [db#77] and a daughter-in-law, Clarissa Phelps [db#79] (widow of son John [db#75]) all found their way to the new settlement in Warsaw .

Recently acquired information from the files of the Cortland County, New York Historical Society strongly suggest that John was a brother of Mathew McWhorter [db#204] [See article in Vol. 2, Issue 2 of the McWh*rter Genealogy Newsletter at page 3] and that both were sons of a John McWhorter who resided in Brookfield and Greenwich, MA before his death in 1769.

Although this information suggests that John [db#73] is not a "progenitor" of a North American family his account will be included here while further evidence of his relationship to John of Brookfield, MA is pursued. A will made by this earlier John purported to have been dated 25-Jan-1768 and executed 1-Aug-1769, if it can be located, may shed considerable light on these connections.

Although the 1790 census of Granville, Washington co., NY suggests that John had perhaps 8 children only seven are known by name.

The children of John were:

Polly [db#78] born in 1767, perhaps in Brookfield, MA. She married in Granville, NY in 1788 Elkannah Day [db#85]. She is said to have removed with her family from Granville to Warsaw, NY in 1806, before her father. She was one of the ten persons who formed the Presbyterian Church in Warsaw in 1808. Her husband was a blacksmith by trade and also served as a Justice of the Peace and an Assistant Justice of the County Court.
.

John [db#75] married Clarissa Phelps [db#79] probably in Granville, NY. He is said to have died in Granville before his father’s removal from there to Warsaw. His widow remarried a Samuel Hough and she removed from Granville to Warsaw, NY with her second husband and two children by John.
.

Jenette (or Jennett) [db#460] married abt 1792 in Granville, NY to Zera Tanner [db#461]. She and her husband removed from Granville first to Cooperstown, NY about 1795 and later, in 1809, to Warsaw, NY. They settled there on the east part of lot 53 on West Hill. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.
.

Patiance [db#76] born in 1774, married in 1808 to Hezekiah Wakefield [db#81]. She and her husband were early members of the Presbyterian Church in Warsaw, NY and their house was commonly used for purposes of religious meetings.
.

Chloe [db#261] was married in Warsaw, Gennessee co., NY to Joel Phippany [db#260]. She was her husband’s second wife. After her marriage she and her husband removed to Sheldon, NY. Her husband died there in 1834 and she returned to Warsaw but later removed to Belvidere, IL.
.

David [db#1922] about whom little is known is said to have died in Manlius, NY in 1809.
.

Samuel [db#77] born 17-Nov-1786 in Hebron, Washington co., NY married in 1812 in Warsaw, NY Annis Brown [db#83]. He removed from Granville to Warsaw with his father in 1807. He taught the first school in Warsaw in 1808 and served as the first Town Clerk. He served many years as a Justice of the Peace and for a term as an Associate Judge of the County Court. He was a member of the Assembly from Gennesee County in 1822. In 1823 he was an original subscriber and Trustee of the Warsaw Library. He was a member of the "Union Society" (Presbyterian) from the time of its inception in 1812. He is listed as a member of the "uniformed Militia and Cavalry" commanded by Isaac Wilson (War of 1812). He was one of the "commissioners" to form the Warsaw and LeRoy Railroad in 1834, a venture that never came to fruition. In 1834 he removed from Warsaw to Portland and then Westfield in Chautaugua co., NY. He later removed to Belvidere, IL and finally to Kilbourn City, WI in 1856. He died there in 1865.
