John McWhorter
of Greenwich, MA
(cir1695-1768)
John
McWhorter (or McWharter or Mewharter) [db#25505] was born before 1700 perhaps in
Ireland or Scotland. In 1742 John McWhorter, then residing in Brookfield, Worcester co.,
MA, purchased from a John McClanathan, land in nearby Greenwich, Hampshire co., MA. The
parcel consisted of 100 acres bounded on the south by the property of a John Rayes [sic],
on the east by "Smooth Quabbin", and on the west by the Swift River. He must
have moved his family there soon after. He was a farmer in Greenwich until his death there
in 1768. In his will John, self described "yeoman", left his "farm"
and "husbandry implements" to his son John [db#73]. John
McWhorters land in Greenwich, as well as the entire town of Greenwich, MA, is now at
the bottom of the Quabbin Reservoir created to provide the area of Boston with a
sufficient supply of water.
Whether
John Sr. arrived in the Colonies prior to his marriage, or the birth of all or some of his
children, is not known. He mentions his "dearly beloved wife" Jannet
[db#25506] in his will, and "Jennet" released her dower rights in 50 acres of
land that John sold in 1762, but her maiden name is not known.
Greenwich,
MA church records relate that John "McWharter" departed this life, aged better
than 70 on 13-Jul-1768. His wife, Jannet, plus three sons and five daughters outlived him.
John
McWhorters children include:
Mathew
McWhorter [db#204]. Mathew is named in the will of his father executed
25-Jan-1768. Although Mathew is listed first among the heirs and is probably the eldest
son, the land and buildings owned by his father were left to Mathews younger brother
John [db#73]. John was also named as executor of his fathers will.
This strongly suggests that Mathew had removed from the Greenwich, MA area prior to his
fathers death. Mathew purchased/sold? land in Pelham, MA in 1760. Indeed, Mathew is
noted as a landholder in Salem, Washington co., NY as early as 1770 and appears to have
been among the first settlers of that place on lots 162 and 163 of the Turner Patent which
was granted in 1764. On 3-Jun-1772 Mathew "...of White Creek, so called, in the Co.
of Albany and Province of New York, husbandman..." sold 50 acres of land in
Greenwich, MA. The baptisms of several of Mathews children are noted in Greenwich,
MA church records between 1756 and 1766 making it likely that he removed from Greenwich,
MA to Salem, NY about 1767. Mathews wife was a "MaryAn"
[db#205] , but her last name remains a mystery. [For more on Mathew McWhorter
[db#204] see Volume 2 Issue 2 of the Newsletter, p. 3-6].
John
McWhorter [db#73] was made executor of his fathers will in 1768 and he
inherited the family farm. He remained in Greenwich, MA until after 1776. Hampshire co.,
MA land records reflect his sale of 50 acres in Greenwich in Dec-1777. Church records
there record the baptisms of his children through 1773. In 1775 he served in the
Revolutionary struggle as a Sergeant in Capt. Joseph Hooker's company of Minute-men, Col.
Ruggles Woodbridge's regiment., which marched 20-Apr-1775, in response to the alarm of
19-Apr-1775. His service at that time was 18 days. John married Bethiah Hall
[db#74] in Greenwich, MA on 14-May-1767. Sometime after 1775 they left Greenwich, MA and
made their way to Hebron and then Granville (1787) in Washington co., NY. On 15-Oct-1781
John McWhorter then "...of Black Creek, Co. of Charlot, State of New York..."
sold several lots in Greenwich, MA. Eventually John removed to the new frontier town of
Warsaw, Gennesse co., NY in 1804. [For more on John McWhorter [db#73]
see Volume 2 Issue 3 of the Newsletter, p. 5-9].
Samuel
McWhorter [db#14550] married 27-Mar-1760 in Greenwich, MA to Mary
McCluer [db#25496]. He must have remained in the area until after 1778 as his
wife Mary died in Greenwich in Feb-1778. He sold land in Greenwich in both Jan-1773 and
Feb-1777. At some point he removed to nearby Ware, MA as Samuel McWhorter reported from
Ware, MA is found in Capt. Jonathan Bardwell's co., Col. David Brewer's (9th) regiment in
October 1775. On 12-Mar-1777 "...in the first year of the independence of the
American States..." Samuel McWhorter "...of Ware..." sold land there
"...where I now dwell...". After the death of his wife he must have removed to
Washington co., NY as he is listed as one of 15 inhabitants [including brother Mathew] of
White Creek (Washington co., NY) who in March 1782 petitioned New York saying they had
never wanted to "sucede" [sic] to Vermont and they were faithful subjects of New
York. By 1784 he is listed as a landholder in Hebron, Washington co., NY.
Jane
McWhorter [db#25507] apparently never married as she is referred to as Jane
"McWhorter" all her life. She is mentioned in the will of her father in 1768
[Greenwich, MA]; the will of her brother Mathew in 1798 [Washington co., NY; and, the will
of her nephew, Mathew McWhorter Jr. [db#206] in 1812 [Washington co.,
NY].
Margaret
McWhorter [db#13782], mentioned as "Margaret Smith" in her
fathers will, married Robert Smith [db#13781] on 13-Dec-1759 in
Westfield, MA. Margarets gravestone in Palmer, MA indicates that she died
28-Jun-1812, age 83, giving her an approximate date of birth of 1729.
Sarah
McWhorter [db#25512] is mentioned in her fathers will as "Sarah Wheeler".
Rachel
McWhorter [db#25508] is mentioned in her fathers will as "Rachel
McCluer". She married Thomas McCluer [db#25509] on 2-Jun-1762 in
Greenwich, MA.
Martha
McWhorter [db#25510] is mentioned in her fathers will as "Martha
Jones". She married John Jones [db#25511] on 8-Mar-1764 in
Greenwich, MA.
