.Hugh E. "Hughey" McWhorter
of Pennsylvania and Delaware
(cir1705-1784)
Hugh
E. McWhorter [db#6859], also referred to as "Hughey" McWhorter,
removed in 1740 from "middle octorara", Lancaster co., PA to Delaware where he
purchased land from a James Kerr. He is not the same person as Hugh McWhorter [db#1]
who arrived in Pencader Hundred, New Castle co., DE about 1730 and who was the father of
the Rev. Alexander McWhorter [db#3] of Newark, New Jersey. But there apparently
exists information that suggests that the two were related.
Moreover,
Hugh E. McWhorters removal in 1740 from the vicinity of Octorara Creek in Lancaster
co., PA suggests that the McWhorters who settled there, perhaps including Moses
McWhorter [db#3677] and David McWhorter [db#118], were also related.
Anna
Harman Bowman reports in her book on the descendants of Moses McWhorter [db#3677]
(See reference #1) that Hugh E. McWhorter made an agreement in 1749 with Hugh McWhorter
[db#1] of New Castle co., DE to buy the latters plantation. She reports that
this purchase was confirmed by Jane [db#2], Hughs wife, after his death in
February/March 1750 (N.S.) and that Hugh E. sold the plantation to his own son John [db#256]
in 1753. Anna Bowman, however, does not indicate the source of this information and I have
not been able to find confirmation of this transfer.
In 1750 a
James Hannah of Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle co., DE named in his will an Uncle Hugh
McWhorter as executor. Although many people have assumed that he was making reference to Hugh
McWhorter [db#1] it seems more likely, given the death of Hugh [db#1] in
February/March of that year, that the reference was to Hugh E. McWhorter [db#6859].
In any event the relationship of James Hannah to either of the Hughs is unclear.
The will
of "Hughey Mawhorter" of Mill Creek Hundred was executed 12-Sep-1783 and
probated 14-May-1784. In the will he mentions three sons and five daughters as well as
other heirs but makes no mention of a wife. His wife, whose name is unknown, is presumed
to have died before "Hughey".
Hugh E.
McWhorters children are thought to include:
 |
John
McWhorter [db#256], who is mentioned in the will of his father, was born
10-Aug-1729 and married three (3) times. John married 1st Jean Faries [db#257]
whose mother, Mary Faries [db#21711], refers in her 1781 will to her daughter Jean
McWhorter and also mentions grandsons Hugh McWhorter [db#2331] and John
McWhorter Jr. [db#2333]. John Sr. married 2nd Rebecca Thomas [db#258] whose
father David Thomas [db#14465] mentions in his will his daughter, Rebecca
McWhorter, and three grandchildren, David [db#2334], Robert [db#2335] and Jane
[db#2336] McWhorter. John Sr. is reported to have married 3rd a Mrs. Sarah
Deschane (or Dushan) [db#259]. John resided in both Pencader Hundred and Red Lion
Hundred, New Castle co., DE.
|
 |
Janet
McWhorter [db#6860] about who little is known, is also mentioned in the will of
her father "Hughey" McWhorter. She is reported to have married a man with the
last name of Craig or Crage or Cragg [db#6867].
|
 |
Sarah
McWhorter [db#6861] is also mentioned in her fathers will along with
grandsons Alexander Young [db#6869] and Hughey Young [db#6870].
|
 |
Robert
McWhorter [db#6862] is mentioned in the will of his father. He married Elizabeth
Eliot [db#6871] and removed from Delaware to Frederick County, Virginia where he died
in 1809.
|
 |
Alexander
McWhorter [db#6863] mentioned in the will of his father has been the subject of
much speculation. Some have suggested that he is the Alexander McWhorter whose estate was
settled in York co., SC in the 1790s. Other suggest that he may be the Alexander
McWhorter who in 1801 built a mill at Portage co., OH.
|
 |
Agnes
McWhorter [db#6864] is NOT mentioned in her fathers will and it is presumed
that she died before him. But her husband John Woods [db#6900] was one of the
executors of her fathers estate and her sons Isaac Woods [db#6901] and Hughey
Woods [db#6902] are mentioned as grandsons of the deceased. Agnes and her husband were
married in 1774 in the Old Dutch Church, New Castle co., DE.
|
 |
(dau.)
McWhorter [db#6865] whose name is unknown is not mentioned in her fathers
will. However, the will does mention a son-in-law Joseph Rankin [db#6903] and
"grandaughter Agnes Rankin [db#6904].
|
 |
Margaret
McWhorter [db#6866] is listed in her fathers will as Margaret Nobles. She
married a James Noble(s) [db#6905] and appears to have had at least one son, Andrew
[db#18796].
