.Hance McWhorter
of Rowan County, North Carolina

Early land records of Rowan County, North Carolina provide evidence that Hance McWhorter [db#476]; John McWhorter [db#5] (son of Hugh McWhorter [db#1] of New Castle County, DE); and, Alexander McWhorter [db#1658] are related. What is not clear is the exact nature of the relationships. It is likely that Hance was a son of John and brother to Alexander, but proof is still lacking.

On 2-Jun-1761 John McWhorter [db#5] and his wife Mary ? [db#32] conveyed to "Hans" McWhorter for 34 pounds a tract of 300 acres adjoining the lands of Alexander Osborn, John Brevard and Robert Brevard. On 21-Dec-1761 Hance received a grant from Lord Granville for 269 acres on "Rockey River", adjoining the lands of Robert Brevard, James Robinson, Henry Potts and John McWhorter.

On 7-Nov-1764 Samuel Blyth sold to Hance McWhorter, "Rowan County, Wheelwright", 460 acres on the south side of the Catawba River, north of Fishing Creek. The Fishing Creek settlement was in what was then Mecklenburg co., NC, but is now part of South Carolina.

On 15-Apr-1767 Hance and his wife "Sarah" sold the land he obtained from John and Mary in 1761 to a James Potts. This latter deed was witnessed by an Alexander McWhorter and William Nesbit. In the transfer Hance is referred to as being "of Mecklenburgh County", NC.

Hance’s will written 18-Oct-1772 and proved 29-Jun-1773 appoints his wife Sarah as guardian for his four (4) named sons.

At the time of the appraisal of his wife Sarah’s estate 14-Nov-1783, a John McWhorter [db#1548], presumed to be Hance’s oldest son, was named administrator. The estate included eight (8) slaves. Signing as a witness to the appraisal was an Alexander McWhorter, probably the same Alexander who witnessed the deed in 1767, and probably a brother of Hance.

It seems likely given the prevalence of the "Winslow" surname among the descendants of Hance, that his wife was Sarah Winslow, daughter of Benjamin Winslow (1706-1759) and Sarah (or Mary) Mathews.

According to one reference, Hance served in a Militia company in the French and Indian War [see NC State Records, Vol. 22, p. 398]. He may also have been the Hance who served as the administrator of the estate of a John McWhorter in Craven County, South Carolina in 1762.

  • Hance McWhorter’s children include:

  • John McWhorter [db#1548] was named in his father’s will of 1773 and was most probably the John who served as administrator of the estate of Hance’s widow, Sarah, in 1783. On 11-Jul-1789 he mortgaged to siblings Hance, Sarah and Rebecah 220 acres of land, a "negro" girl named Bina, a wagon, four pair of horse gears, horses and other stock for a period of 20 years. In 1790 he is listed as head of family in York co., SC. On 18-mar-1791 he, along with his brothers, conveyed to Shadrach Rawls (perhaps #1664, son-in-law of Alexander McWhorter [db#1658]), part of the land left them by their father. At various times thereafter he is said to have lived in Buncombe co., NC; Knox co., TN; Madison co., AL and Lawrence co., AL. John was a soldier of the Revolution and applied for a pension from Lawrence co., AL.

  • Benjamin McWhorter [db#1549] was living in Buncombe co., NC by 1793. By 1800, however, he is listed as head of family in York District, SC. He is not found in the York District census of 1810, but a Benjamin McWhorter is listed as selling land in York District in 1817 and 1819 and purchasing land there as late as 1822. The 1840 census of York co., SC lists him as a Revolutionary War pensioner, age 75.

  • Moses Winsley (or Winslow) McWhorter [db#1550] is listed as a head of family in York District, SC in 1790. His estate was settled in Lawrence co., AL in 1846-47.

  • Hance McWhorter Jr. [db#1551] married in Buncombe co., NC to Anne Catherine Patton [db#1653]. He mortgaged land on the north side of the main branch of Fishing Creek in Buncome co. on 18-Dec-1804. Hance is listed as head of family in the 1810 census of York District, SC. By 1830 he removed to Gibson co. TN where he is found in census records in 1830, 1840 and 1850. Hance Jr. was a brother-in-law of the famous Davy Crockett of TN. His wife’s sister, Elizabeth, was Davy’s 2nd wife.

  • Mary McWhorter [db#1552] purchased at the Chattel Estate sale of Sarah McWhorter 22-Dec-1783.

  • Sarah McWhorter [db#1553] took a mortgage along with Rebecah and Hance on personal and real estate of John McWhorter on 11-Jul-1789. She married near Ashville, NC to George Davidson [db#5110]. They lived "for many years" in Franklin co., TN and then removed to Mississippi.

  • Rebecah McWhorter [db#1554] took a mortgage along with Sarah and Hance on the property of John McWhorter in 1789. She is said to have remained in York co., SC and married a John Henderson [db#5114].

  • Jane McWhorter [db#5115] married a James Cunningham [db#5116] and removed to Lawrence co., AL. Her son, Hance Cunningham [db#6793] is said to have been the first Sheriff of Lawrence co., AL.
