George Gray McWhorter
of South Carolina and Alabama

(1762-1829)

George Gray McWhorter [db#252] was a Presbyterian minister who held pastorates throughout South Carolina and later Alabama. He is thought by some to have been a son of Jacob McWhorter [db#6915] and Elizabeth Gray [db#6916]. It is also thought by some that George was a brother of Hugh McWhorter [db#3227] who came to America about 1795 (See McWh*rter Genealogy Newsletter Volume I, Issue 4, Fall 1997). At least one source [see reference #1] contends that Hugh purchased a plantation from George in 1813, but I have not seen any original documentation of such a purchase. Hugh did have a son born cir1800 who was also named George Gray McWhorter [db#3234].

The Rev. George Gray McWhorter was trained for the ministry by the Reverand James Hall of Statesville, NC and he was ordained 7-Jul-1796.

In 1796 the Presbytery of South Carolina was divided and those living west of the Savannah River constituted the new Presbytery of Hopewell which reported George Gray McWhorter as one of its members. In that same year the church at Bethel joined with the church at Beersheba to call the Rev. George G. McWhorter as their pastor in which service he remained until September, 1801.

Subsequently George Gray served as pastor for Salem Church (Black River)(Sep-1802); Midway (Oct-1803); Mount Zion (in Sumter District) (1810); and Concord Church (also in Sumter District).

On 19-Apr-1822 he was dismissed from these charges at his own request to the Presbytery of Georgia.

A history of the Lowndesboro Presbyterian Church of Lowndesboro, AL states that in 1823, the Rev. George Gray McWhorter was sent as pastor from the Presbytery of South Carolina to reorganize the church. He became the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Montgomery, AL in 1825.

From Robert Nall’s "DEAD OF THE SYNOD OF ALABAMA" (Mobile 1851) comes the following report of George’s death:

....."The Rev. George G. McWhorter, of the Presbytery of Georgia, became a member of the Presbytery of Alabama April 2, 1829. Of this father I have no recollection. He was soon called from his new field of labor. Under date of November 19, 1829, I find the following minutes: - ‘It is our painful duty to record the death of our father and faithful laborer, the Rev. George G. McWhorter. He was a patriot and a soldier in the Revolutionary War...’."

His body, first interred in1829, was reburied in Montgomery, AL in 1841 along side that of his wife Eliza Drusilla Cooper [db#253]. His will dated and probated at Montgomery, AL in 1829 names his wife and living children.

The Rev. George Gray McWhorter’s children include:

Jacob Gray McWhorter [db#894] is said to have attended Princeton University and become a physician in Augusta, Georgia. His will was recorded in Augusta in 1852.

Alexander Burnett McWhorter [db#6926] also began a career as a physician in Edgefield, South Carolina. Eventually he brought his practice to Montgomery, AL where his will is recorded in 1859.

Alwyn Amzi "A. A." McWhorter [db#6943] was liscensed as an Attorney-at-Law in the Alabama Territory, 14-Aug-1819. He married in Coosawda, AL in 1822 and was found in the 1830 census living in Autauga County, AL. He died in 1849 and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Old Division, in Montgomery, AL.

Eliphalet Ariel McWhorter [db#6962] died unmarried, supposedly "killed by a falling tree".

Elizabeth Drusilla McWhorter [db#6963] became the second wife of a Henry Britton [db#6965] and lived in South Carolina.

George Cooper McWhorter [db#6964 found his way to Baton Rouge, LA where he is found in the census of 1850. He eventually became State Treasurer of Louisiana.

Mijamin Sidney McWhorter [db#6961] was admitted to the practice of law in South Carloina in 1823. He found his way to New Orleans, LA where, unmarried, he died of smallpox.
