Indenture of Jesse Cowand


STATE of NORTH CAROLINA

This Indenture, made the eighth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two and in the 26th year of American Independence, BETWEEN Thomas W. Pugh, Esquire, Chairman of the County Court of Bertie and the rest of the Justices of said Court, of the one part; and Thomas Newborn of the other part, WITNESSETH, that the said Thomas W. Pugh, Chairman of the County Court aforesaid in pursuance to an order of the said Court, doth put, place and bind unto the said Thomas Newborn, Jesse Cowand, fifteen years of age, with the said Thomas Newborn, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant, until the said apprentice shall attain to the age of Twenty-one years, during all which time the said apprentice his master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands every where gladly obey, he shall not at any time absent himself from his said master's service without leave, but in all things, as a good and faithful servant, shall behave towards his said master. And the said Thomas Newborn doth covenant, promise and agree to and with the said Thomas W. Pugh, that he will teach and instruct, or cause to be taught or instructed, the said Jesse Cowand in the art and mistery of a cooper and also to read, write and cypher agreeable to law.

And that he will constantly find and provide for the said apprentice, during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging, and apparel fitting for an apprentice; and also all other things necessary, both in sickness and in health. IN WITNESS whereof, the parties to these presents have hereunto interchangeably set their hands and seals the day and year hereabove written.
