Descendants of Johannes Goehring

Johannes and Barbara Goehring did not leave Taebingen, Germany, but several of their children did. As far as I know, they are not directly related to my immigrant ancestor, Christian Goehring (Ghering); however, their daughter, Mary Ann Ghering, married Christian Ghering, Jr.  These families were close to my immigrant ancestor's children  because they all lived in close proximity.

It is possible that Christian Ghering, Jr. and Mary Ann Ghering were distantly related since they came from the same small town in Germany and had the same last name. However, Christian left Germany in 1843 when he was only five. And, Mary Ann was not born until 1847. So, they did not meet until she came to America. Howard Strawbridge asserts numerous times in his documentation that they are not related.

Her mother, Barbara’s maiden name was Goehring. However, Barbara was not from the same town as Johannes. Barbara’s parents were Johann Goerg Goehring and Anna Binder. Her father was a weaver in Bickelsberg, Germany.

Johannes (b. January 16, 1814 in Taebingen) and Barbara Goehring (b. January 23, 1813) married 12 November 1839 and had five children who lived to maturity. The only child to stay in Taebingen was Anna who married Mr. Byrd.

The following children emigrated to America at different times:

bulletMary Ann and an older cousin, Anna Renner, emigrated in 1864 in a large sailboat in a voyage of 60 days, according to Howard Strawbridge.

Mary Ann Ghering
b. Feb. 19, 1847 and d. April 26, 1936
Mary married Christian Ghering of Cherrytree Township on Feb. 24, 1870, and lived on a farm near East Troy, Crawford County, PA. They had four children, Anna Ghering Shriver 1871 - 1948, Lucy Ghering Kees 1873 - 1959, Theodore C. Ghering 1881 - 1882, and Grace Ghering Williams 1888 - 1959. Christian died Dec. 8, 1901, aged 63.

Mary then married Elbert R. Carey, a teamster of Titusville, on Oct. 14, 1913. He died Aug. 10, 1933, and is buried with his first wife in Titusville. Mary, 89, died at her home in Titusville. Christian and Mary are buried at East Troy Cemetery.

John F. Ghering
b. Aug. 24, 1854 and d. Feb. 14, 1931
John F. married on Nov. 4, 1880, Mina Bowman who was born January 1862 and they lived on a farm in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, PA. They had a daughter, Mable V. Ghering Alcorn 1882. Mina died Feb. 27, 1934, and they are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Cherrytree Township.

Martin L. Ghering
b. Nov. 13, 1856 d. Sept. 10, 1929
Martin L. was married on Dec. 9, 1880, to Margaret Hollabaugh. They had nine children: Blanche E. Ghering, Albert Henry Ghering, Addie May Ghering Deets, Bertha Grace Ghering Bush, Rose Belle Ghering Reynolds, Elmer "Lee" Ghering, Winnie Louise Ghering Bly, Gladys Neva Ghering Ehrhart, and Robert Edward Ghering. They lived on a farm near Troy Center, Crawford County. His wife Margaret died March 3, 1927, and they are buried at Troy Center. 

Leonard Ghering
b. Jan. 22, 1861 d. Jan. 20, 1928
Leonard was married on April 11, 1882, to Anna Birk, who was born Aug. 28, 1856. He first mined, then farmed near Columbia, PA. They had three daughters: Barbara, Rose and Mary. His wife died Oct. 14, 1939, and they are buried in the Columbia area.

3.  MARY ANN2 GHERING (JOHANNES1 GOEHRING)6 was born 19 February 1847 in Germany6, and died 26 April 1936 in East Troy, PA6.  She married (1) CHRISTIAN GHERING7 21 February 1870 in Cherrytree Township, Pennsylvania7, son of CHRISTIAN GOEHRING/GHERING and CHRISTINA LINK.  He was born 27 December 1838 in Germany, and died 08 December 1901 in East Troy, PA8.  She married (2) ELBERT R. CAREY9 14 October 1913 in Titusville, Crawford Co, Pennsylvania10,11.  He was born 27 January 1850 in Chermung county, N.Y12, and died 10 August 1933 in Titusville, Crawford Co, Pennsylvania13.

WILLIAMS55 30 March 1905 in Jamestown, NY56, son of WILLIAM WILLIAMS and MARTHA SHARPE.  He was born 09 February 1881 in Troy Township, PA56, and died 27 December 1954 in Titusville, Crawford Co., PA56.
