Christian Ghering

Christian was the youngest son of Johannes Göhring, a shoemaker, and Anna Catharina Sautter, daughter of Johannes Sautter, a farmer. In 1843, he was the first son in his family to leave for America. He left Taebingen with his wife Christina and five children and traveled more than 400 miles to the port of Havre in northern France. He arrived in the Port of New York about 70 days later and from there traveled to Cherrytree Township, Venango County, in northwestern Pennsylvania.  I am not sure why they chose that area. Christina's stepfather, Joseph Link and his second wife Anna Maria (Mary) Goehring Link went to America in 1832 with five children.  However, they settled in Attica, Seneca County, Ohio where Jacob died in 1940 at age 51. More information about Christian and Christina is in the Christian Ghering History.

Christian and Christina had 13 children.  Of those, 9 have descendants.  To view a genealogy report of each of their children who had descendants, click this link: Christian's Children.

With Venango County, PA researcher Joyce Neidich's help, I have met some descendants of Christian and Christina's children. Some of them have shown me artifacts that were passed down from Christian and Christina Goehring (Ghering).

Joyce Ghering McKain, descendant of Isaac Henry Ghering, not only showed me Christina's sewing kit, she also gave me copies of two of my grandfather George H. Ghering's books that I had no hope of ever finding.  In addition, she gave me a picture of the trunk that Christian and Christina brought with them to America. The trunk was passed down to George Ghering's daughter Margaret Ghering Holder, then to her daughter Margaret Holder Smith, and is now owned by Margaret Smith's son, John Smith. I am a descendant of Christian and Cristina's son George Ghering

Anita Ghering, married to Chester Ghering, a descendant of Isaac Henry Ghering, showed me an extremely old bible that she said belonged to Christian Ghering. Indeed, it has the name "Christian Ghering" and a sentence in German written in it.

The list continues to grow. I recently met Cynthia Ghering, a descendant of Jacob Ghering, through the Internet. She shared pictures of her ancestors and Michael Ghering's family. Jacob and Michael moved to Michigan and many of their descendants still live there. In 1999, Cynthia was attending the University of Michigan and getting a masters degree as an archivist.
