This portion of the Göhring (spelled Goehring when not using the umlaut) family history starts with the children of Johannes Goehring and Anna Sautter. It is with Johanne's children that the Goehring exodus to America began. The youngest son, my ancestor Christian and his family were the first to leave in 1843. In 1944, his brother Conrod and his family left. Several of Martin's children also left. To view the further information about these sons, click the button on the left with their name. This is my attempt to keep this information organized.
Why did they leave? It is my belief that parents were tired of losing their sons to war. The promise of owning land and having a more comfortable life were also big lures. America held a promise for a better life than what they could look forward to in their little town of Täbingen. The Goehring family was not the richest in town. In addition, they undoubtedly were receiving letters from others who had already gone to America and were happy with their decision.

You may notice duplicate names in the the family, this is common in Germany. You will see the same names in the generations back to the 1600's. If a child died, the next one born was very often given the same name. They must have wanted the names to be passed to the next generation. Five of Christians siblings died quite young and Johannes died in a war.
My immigrant ancestor was Christian Ghering. He and his family left Germany April 27, 1843 and arrived at the Port of New York June 16, 1843. From there, they traveled to Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
Christians brother Conrod emigrated to the United States July 24, 1844. Conrod died in Dempseytown, Venango County, Pennsylvania. His descendants spelled their surname "Gahring," although some chose other spellings.
Brothers Johann Georg, Martin, and Michael stayed in Täbingen. However, some of Martins children also went to the USA. They spelled their surname "Gharing."
Michaels descendants are still in Täbingen. When I visited Täbingen in May 1998, I met Elisabeth Göhring Haller, one of Michael's descendants. Trip to Täbingen
