Roger PRESTON was born about 1614 in England. On 8 April 1635 he took an oath at the port of London and embarked on the Elizabeth of London, describing himself as a tanner. He went to Massachusetts where we find records of him in Ipswich owning land in 1639 about the time we believe that he married Martha who was born about 1622. Roger died on 20 Jan 1666 at Lynn, MA. After his death, Martha married Nicholas HOLT, 21 May 1666, Andover MA. She was his third wife. They lived in Andover where Martha took her children with probably the exception of Thomas. Martha died 21 March 1702/3, aged upwards of 80 years. |

Preston's Militia Unit has deserted him and that effectual measures should be implied to prevent this from happening in other units. On February 4, 1777 he was listed as Colonel, First Regiment, Cumberland County Militia at which time he resigned. Evidently his resignation was not accepted because the records say that he commanded his regiment in service, February 1777, and in consequence of a severe fatiqueing and dangerous Expedition against the Enemy, then at New Brunswick, about the 25th of February 1777, he was seized with a violent disease of which he died in camp, March 5, 1777. Records from David's Library, Washington Crossing, PA He was buried at Christ Church yard or old burying ground on the banks of the Cohansey River, below Fairton, NJ in the same plot as his grandfather Levi. Hannah Preston received for the Estate of Col. Isaac Preston a Certificate No. 41 signed by Eli Elmer, in the amount of $10.0.0, for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the Cumberland County Militia, dated May 1, 1784. The School room was the one towards The Head of Greenwich. Miss Lizzie and Miss Hannah would take turns teaching. Very conveniently one could prepare the dinner while the other sister heard the A.B.C's."
