NEWSPAPER ARTICLES The first two articles were sent to my by my cousin Betty Byrd Lewis, San Antonio, Texas - no source was given - possibly the same paper as the third article. The third article was copied from microfilm in the Quincy Library, June 1999. ------------------------------------------------ UNFORTUNATE OCCURENCE We are informed that Capt. Joshua Pierce, of this County, who received a severe; contusion on his head, a week or so since, died at his residence on the 20th dlt. As Mr. John Craig, also of this County is suspected to to be the person who gave the blow, and is now in confinement in the jail, at Quincey to answer the charge, it is not proper that we should at present make any comment on the circumstances connected with the supposed offence. Capt. Pierce was a very respectable farmer, and has left a widow and several small children to lament his untimely fate. ------------------------------------------------ PROCLAMATION. TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS REWARD! Whereas JOHN CRAIG, who stands indicted in the circuit court of Adams county, Illinios for the murder of Joshua Pierce, made his escape on the night of the 16th of September last. - Therefore to promote the cause of Justice, and by the authority vested in me, I, Joseph Duncan, Governor of the state of Illinois, all upon all good and well disposed citizens to aid in the apprehension of the said Craig. Said CRAIG is about 50 years of age, about six feet high, slender made, florid complexion, sandy Colored hair, and has a mole on the right side of his chin. He talks much when not under restraint, and is much given to drinking ardent spirits to excess. He had on when he went away, a snuff colored coat, with a velvet collar, blue cloth pantaloons, white vest, and chequered chip hat, and was riding a gray horse. The above reward of TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS will be paid to any person who may deliver said Craig to sheriff of Adams County, Illinois, or in such manner secure him in any jail, as to make certain his delivery on the application of said Shereff.
