Howell Family


Joshua HOWELL was born in 1800, Meriwether Co., GA . He married Mary BRUCE , daughter of John BRUCE, Sr. and Rutha SMITH. Rutha was born 1830 in Meriweather Co., GA .

In 1850 Joshua and Mary were living in Tallapoosa Co., AL with their children: Abel, Joseph, Joshua, Rutha and Jasper. in 1860 athey were in the same county next door to son Abel. 1870 finds them in next door to their son John H. in Eufalah, Tallapoosa Co., AL. The census indicates that Joshua could not read or write.

Children of Joshua and Mary:

  • 1. John H. Howell, born 2 Mar 1822, GA , died 3 Oct 1898, Anna, Collin Co., TX, married Emily Caroline COBB.
  • 2. Maud Amanda Howell born 24 Apr 1830, GA, died 23 Nov 1909, Ballinger, Runnels Co., TX married William Matthew VINEYARD, born 1826, GA.
  • 3. Abel Howell born 1832, GA. He died in the Fort Delaware Prison. He was married to Louisa.
  • 4. Joseph Putman Howell, born 28 Apr 1834, GA , died, 23 Jan 1897, , Collin Co., TX,,married Amanda Melvina TICE, born 7 Apr 1835, , DeKalb Co., GA. They are buried the Josephine Cemetery, Josephine, Collin Co, TX
  • 5. Joshua Howell, Jr., born 12 May 1836, GA, died 2 Jul 1863, Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA, married Evaline TUCKER who died in Freestone Co., TX
  • 6. Rutha Howell, born1837, GA, married James FINCH, born 1837, Talbot Co., GA, died 15 Jul 1863.
  • 7. Jasper Howell, born 19 Mar 1841, Tallapoosa Co., AL, died 22 May 1907, married Martha Elizabeth born 1842, died 7 Aug 1896. They are buried in the Short Mountain Cemetery, Cowlington, Le Flore Co., OK.

All five of Joshua and Mary's sons served in the War Between the States. Abel died in prison, Joshua, Jr. died at Gettysburg and grandson Joseph P Howell, son of John H. Howell, died in the Second Battle of Bull Run at Manassas, VA.

Colemans, Elmore Co., AL is where Joshua and Mary were living in 1880. It is assumed they died and are buried there some time after 1880.


Joseph Putnam HOWELL was born 28 Apr 1834 in Alabama. Amanda Melvina TICE who was born 7 Apr 1833, DeKalb Co, GA, was married to Joseph on 3 Jul 1854 in Ittawambi Co, MS. They moved to Texas before 1858 when their second child Mary M was born. Joseph enlisted 29 February 1862 in Company D, 11th Texas Infantry, Confederate States Army, in Mount Pleasant, Titus Co, TX. According to the pension application records of Mrs. A. M. Howell, he served until the end of the Civil War.

They were the parents of these children:

  • 1. William J (Billy) Joshua, born 15 May 1855, married Mary Elizabeth McDANIEL, died 20Nov 1920, Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TX, buried Weinert Cemetery, Haskell Co., TX.
  • 2. Mary (Mollie), born 1858, died 1885, married Richard Calahan McFADDEN
  • 3. James Kindrick, born 19 Oct 1862; died 11 Mar 1926; married 1. Sula MCCLENDON, 2. Mary Connie MURCHISON, 25 Sep1897, Farmersville, Collin Co, TX
  • 4. Martha J, born 1865, married L C SMITH, 21 January 1883, Hunt Co, TX
  • 5. Henry M, born 1865; died 1943 married Lee CESTER
  • 6. Josephine M, born 1870; died 1912; married James G WILCOXON, 10 Mar 1887, Hunt Co, TX

By 1870 the family had moved to Greenville, Hunt Co, TX where Joseph raised stock and farmed. Joseph died 23 Jan 1897 and is buried in the Josephine Cemetery, Josephine, Collin Co, TX. When Amanda applied for a CSA Widows's pension in 1909 she was living in Quinlin, Hunt, Co, TX. The Pension Application #15649 was approved 31 Aug 1909. According to family tradition Amanda is buried in the Josephine Cemetery. There is a birthdate on the double tombstone but no death date.


James Kindrick HOWELL, son of Joseph Putnam HOWELL and Amanda Melvina TICE, was born 19 Oct 1862. He married Sula MCCLENDON on 24 Jan 1884, Madiera, TX. They had two daughters:
  1. Mattie Aline HOWELL, born 7 Dec 1884, TX, died 13 Jan 1964, Baytown, Harris Co., TX, married Jefferson Davis MARTIN, buried Sterling White Chapel and Cemetery, Highlands, Harris Co., TX
  2. Addie Lillie HOWELL, born 29 Jul 1893, died 21 Aug 1941, San Antonio, Bexas Co., TX, married 1909 Ernest Bedford HIGDON, buried San Fernando Cemetery #3, San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX.

Sula died sometime after Addie was born.

on 25 Sep 1897 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX, he married Mary Connie MURCHISON, daughter of Rory MURCHISON and Elizabeth GILL. She was born on 2 Apr 1872 at Collin Co, TX.

  1. Ida Elizabeth HOWELL (Lizzie) was born on 21 Dec 1899 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. She married James Edgar HALL on 4 Sep 1917. She married Ed JOINES on 27 May 1944. She died on 24 Aug 1983 at Lubbock, Lubbock Co, TX.
  2. Joe Henry HOWELL was born on 22 Oct 1902 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. He married Frances HOWELL on 19 Sep 1931 at Ft Worth, Harris Co, TX. He died on 1 Apr 1980 at Corsicana, TX. He was buried on 2 Apr 1980 at IOOF Cem, Quinlan, TX.
  3. Julia Melvina HOWELL She was born on 8 Dec 1903 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. She married John Francis NUNLEY on 23 Dec 1919 at Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. She died on 4 Aug 1996 at Graham, TX. She was buried on 7 Aug 1996 at Mountain Home Cemetery, Jack County, TX.
  4. James Kindrick HOWELL (Kinnie) was born on 15 Nov 1906 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. He married Cleo Beatrice ROSS on, daughter of John W. and Martha Jane ROS, 25 Jun 1927 at Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. He died on 17 May 2001 at Twighlight Nursing Home, Corsicana, Navaro, TX. He is burie Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro Co, TX.
  5. Josephine HOWELL (Josie)She was born on 21 Dec 1908 at Farmersville, Collin Co, TX. She married Hoyt Newton BERRYMAN, son of Jasper Lawyer BERRYMAN and Alice Melinda Frances GUEST, on 4 Sep 1926 at Hunt Co, TX. She died on 3 Apr 1957 at Tyler, Smith Co, TX, at a. She was buried on 4 Apr 1957 at Rose Hill Cem, Tyler, Smith Co,TX.
  6. Carrie Ruth HOWELL was born in 1910 at Quinlan, Hunt Co, TX. She died in 1911.
  7. Flora Etta HOWELL (Sis) She was born on 21 Jan 1914 at Quinlan, Hunt Co, TX. She married Tommie R DUNNAHOE in Jan 1931 at Walters, OK. She married Glen Allen CURFMAN, son of William Allen CURFMAN and Bertie Hamelton MEWSHAW, on 3 Aug 1937 at Greenville, Hunt Co, TX. She died on 17 Sep 2002 at TX.

fter James and Connie were married they lived in Farmersville. In 1908 the family bought a farm in Hunt County two miles south of Quinlan. Janes died 11 Mar 1926.

Connie lived on the farm for several years. About 1937 she started living with her children. Eventually she lived with her daughter Josie in Tyler. After Josie died in 1957 she moved to Greenville and lived with her daughter Lizzie until her death 20 Jan 1959. James and Connie are buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Quinlan, TX. Howell Pictures
