PIONEER WOMAN DIES - ELIZABETH HAYLEY Deep sorrow universally shared by all fell upon Bronte Saturday morning when it became known that Mrs. Elizabeth Hayley, wife of Col. H. H. Hayley, deceased, had passed away at the midnight hour at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lela Peeler, at Clyde, with whom she was making her home when death called her to her reward. Deceased was 85 years old and was one of the pioneers of the Bronte country, coming with her husband, Col. H. H. Hayley, at an early day and settling in Hayrick community. Her husband, Col. H. H. Hayley, who died three years ago, was a colonel in Confederate army, and died "an unreconstructed rebel." Coming here before Coke county was organized he and his faithful wife endured all the hardships of the frontier country and wrought mightily in fashioning and forming the social, educational and religious ideals of this part of the West. Deceased had been a member of the Methodist church for seventy-one years and throughout her long, eventful life her duties to her church and in the religious realm always were first with her. Hers was a beautiful, unselfish life, devoted to her church, her home and her children and to the good of the world. Hence like Narcissus, there have sprung up, and will continue to spring up, flowers, beautiful and fragrant, to bloom in the lives of others, that will make life gladsome and beautiful for those who follow on, and every memory, of her gentle life of ministry and service will be as a benediction from the skies, to her children, and grand children and the many friends who knew and deeply loved her, for her work's sake, while she walked this earthly way. Hence it was befitting that, Saturday afternoon, her poor, tired, feeble body be put away at Clyde beside that of her husband, after her pastor, the pastor of the Clyde Methodist church, had spoken gracious and beautiful things concerning her queenly life. Deceased is survived by five children, twenty-three grand children and eight great grandchildren. The children are: Mrs. Lela Peeler, Clyde; Mrs. Annie Parker, Lubbock; Mrs. Pat McMullan, Midland; Alvin Hayley, Bronte and Larkin Hayley, Norton. With their hosts of friends The Enterprise joins in extending deepest sympathy in this hour of their sorrow--for, those who think and feel correctly, mother new grows too old, but that when she is gone, we recognize we have given up the one who loves us most. The Bronte Enterprise, Coke County, TX, 1 August 1930. Note: Elizabeth Jane BAILEY was born 18 Sep 1844, Macon, GA, married Holiday Hyde HAYLEY, 2 Jul 1867, MS. MLB
