All my life my Dad told me that unless the people spelled their name with two Ys (Hayley) that we were not related. It only took me a few days of researching to find out that he was wrong. Our blood line comes from James Haley who settled in Virginia in Isle of Wight County on the Meherrin River. Cousin Charlie Hayley started researching our family many years ago and his daughter Miriam Dougherty continued his research and published The Hayley Family, a book which traces our family from James down to1984. My line went from Virginia to North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and on to Texas. There are many Hayley, Haley, Hailey families in the US and England. It is my hope that the DNA Project will sort these families out and we will be able to tell from whence we came. |

I have no connection with or financial interest in Family Tree DNA, the company chosen to conduct the Y-DNA testing.
Understanding the results of Y-DNA testing within the context of genealogy is not easy because it involves a knowledge of both genetics and statistics that most of us don't have. Fortunately, there are folks out there who understand both and are genealogists as well. The best of both worlds! Immediately below are URLs where you can find more information than you want or need. I would urge that you visit these sites and read a little. Please *don't* be intimidated by all the jargon and details. I'd suggest that you go to the tutorial site first. Read as much as you can and then scroll down to see the results to date for the Hayley/Haley/Hailey Project.

Results of all the kits of the eight participants have been received and posted on the web page.
Kits #21831 and #22028 match exactly in the 12 marker test. #21789 has one mutation in a fast mutating marker 439. All of these people share the same gggrandfather Jacob Hayley who is descended from James, VA. Kits #23478 and #22268 match in the first 12 marker test and only one mutation 464d is found in the 25 marker test. In both cases the earliest known ancestors are from Tennessee. None of the other kits show any indication that they are closely related. Hopefully others will join this project which will give more information and hopefully more matches! |

* Haplogroup confirm is in Green and system prediction is in red
- A dash means the system wasn't able to predict your haplogroup
* Faster mutating markers are shown in red.
"DYS 19 is also known as DYS 394."
The Haplogroups listed above were "assigned" by FamilyTreeDNA and have not been confirmed by additional testing. FamilyTreeDNA comment: "It is obvious from our observation of 1000's of samples that some markers change or mutate at a faster rate than others. While that actual 'faster rate' has not yet been definitively calculated, not all markers should be treated the same for evaluation purposes. The markers in red have shown a faster mutation rate then the average, and therefore these markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into sub sets, or branches, within your family tree. Explained another way, if you match exactly on all of the markers except for one or a few of the markers we have determined mutate more quickly, then despite the mutation this mismatch only slightly decreases the probability of two people in your surname group who match 11/12 or even 23/25 of not sharing a recent common ancestor." |
