JOSIAH "JOSEPH" DAVIS and SOPHIA JACKSON

Josiah "Joseph" DAVIS was born on 9 May 1757. He married Sophia JACKSON, daughter of John JACKSON and Elizabeth CUMMINGS, who was born 11 September 1763, Howard Lick, Hardy County, WV.

Children of Joseph DAVIS and Sophia Jackson were as follows:

  • 1. John, born 28 April 1786, Harrison County, WV; died 16 November 1804
  • 2. Mary; born 22 January 1787, Harrison County, WV; died 27 February 1808; married Abraham BRAKE, 26 March 1807, Harrison Co, WV. Abraham was the son of Jacob BRAKE and Mary SLAUGHTER. He was born 24 July 1786; died 1889, Upshur County, WV.
  • 3. Elizabeth, born 22 January 1788, Harrison County, WV; died August 1844; married 1. John PARKER, 20 March 1809, Harrison Co, WV, 2. Henry BUTT, Between 1832 - 1840
  • 4. William Jackson, born 31 December 1791, French Creek, Upshur County, WV; died 5 November 1850 married Lydia GOULD, 11 April 1815, French Creek, Lewis County, WV. Lydia was the daughter of Aaron GOULD and Lydia GRAY. She was born 2 February 1794, Charlemont, Hampshire County, MA; died 4 January 1859, Timewell, Brown County, IL
  • 5. Edward, born 20 February 1794, Harrison County, WV; died 29 October 1836; married Eleanor STOUT, 17 February 1817, Harrison County, WV.
  • 6. Sarah, born 2 October 1795, Harrison County, WV; died 23 February 1839, Lewis County, WV; married George Peter ROHRBOUGH, 27 May 1817, Lewis Co, WV.
  • 7. Henry, born 19 November 1796, Harrison County, VA; died 23 March 1870, Grayson County, TX; buried Hall Cemetery, Howe, Grayson, County, TX; married 1. Anna BUSH, 13 Jan 1817, Harrison County, WV,
    2. Elizabeth M. (--?--) ca 1865. Anna, the daughter of George BUSH, JR. and Mary WOLF, was born 22 June 1800 and died ca 1855.
  • 8. Joseph, born January 1800; died 1860; married Peggy BLACK, 11 Feb 1823, Lewis Co., WV.
  • 9. Rebecca Obedience, born 30 November 1802, Harrison County, WV; died 17 June 1839; married William WARNER.
  • 10. Margaret, born 3 May 1805; died 1851; married Benjamin MOUNT, 26 September 1829, Lewis County, WV.

Joseph died on 18 Oct 1832 at Upshur, Lewis Co, WV, at age 75. His will is recorded in Lewis County, West Virginia, Will Book (one), Page 244. Sophia died 10 March 1836.

HENRY DAVIS and ANNA BUSH

Henry DAVIS was born on 19 November 1796 in Harrison Co, VA. He married 13 Jan 1817 Anna BUSH, daughter of George BUSH, JR. and Mary WOLFE, who was born 22 June 1800. The family moved in 1832 to Clayton, Adams Co, IL. Anna was sometimes called Annie

  • 1. Prudence; born 12 June 1817; married J. W. MILLER; died 5 Sep 1901, Sterling City, TX
  • 2. George Bush; born July 1819.
  • 3. Mary Katherine, born 30 September 1822; married William PEARCE, son of Joshua PEARCE and Sarah GOLDEN
  • 4. Mahala; born 1 June 1823; died 24 February1900, buried Hall Cemetery, Howe, TX
  • 5. Elizabeth; born 14 February1825, Lewis Co., WV; died 20 August 1922, buried, Hall Cemetery, Howe, Grayson Co, TX.; married William R. JACKSON*
  • 6. Frances; born 1828; married Frank JACKSON*
  • 7. Marshall Henry, born 25 March 1829, Lewis Co, WV; died 10 August 1906, Sterling City, TX; married Mary Jane COTTEN, daughter of Rev. Thomas Wadlington COTTEN and Catherine Shaw MCCOMB, 6 February 1859, Grayson Co, TX - Bible Record
  • 8. Samantha; born September 1831.

*William R. and Frank JACKSON are reported to be brothers. At this time their parents are unknown.

In 1851 the family lived in Warsaw, Hancock Co, IL. After their daughter Mary Katherine PEARCE died circa 1851, Henry and Anna took their grandchildren Henry Davis and Amanda Alvira PEARCE to raise. According to the Memoirs of their grandson Henry Davis Pierce, Anna died in Warsaw about 1855 and she and her daughter Mary are buried in the same cemetery but at this time the cemetery is unknown.

Henry and his children left Illinois by wagon train and and arrived in Grayson County, TX, in May 1956. The family settled in the Ferguson Post Office area. Henry was a Baptist Minister and was referred to as Elder Henry Davis. He also farmed and was a beekeeper.

He married Elizabeth M. (--?--) about 1865.

  • 1. Henry Ulysses, born 1866, TX

Henry Davis died on 23 Mar 1870 at the age 73 and is buried in the Hall Cemetery, Howe, Grayson County, TX. There are two tombstones in the cemetery. One put there by his wife which says he was born May 15, 1797 and one put there by his daughter Elizabeth who gives his birthdate as November 19, 1797.

In his will he left everything to his second wife E. M. and son Henry Ulysses. His son M. H. Davis and daughter Elizabeth Jackson and her husband William R. Jackson contested the will. The judge made E. M. executrix of the will.
