Budreo & Bovair Families

William ILIFF married Margaret Jane BUDREO on November 25, 1896 in Toronto.

Maggie was born on 4 May 1878 in Tecumseth twp., Simcoe Co. Ontario. What I know about her family is the following.

Her paternal grandparents were Joseph & Elizabeth BUDREO and her maternal grandparents were Charles BOVAIR and Susannah HUNT.

First, Joseph & Elizabeth BUDREO: I found them in five censuses, 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. For the first two they were living in Tecumseth twp and for the third census, they were in Alliston. Joseph was a cooper and he gives his birth place as Quebec in all three censuses. In 1891, he states that both of his parents were born in France. Elizabeth was born in Ireland as were both of her parents. The family is Roman Catholic. Finally, in 1901 the Budreos were in Ottawa.

1851: online - West Flamborough twp., Wentworth Co. Ontrario.  Joseph is age 33, Elizabeth is 37 and Francis is 4.

1871: microfilm C-9960, div. 2 of Tecumseth, page 42, name given as Joseph Rudreo. Their son Francis is living at home, age 22, born in USA. No other children are with them. Joseph is marked as being unable to read or write; Elizabeth is unable to write.

1881: microfilm C-13250, div. 2 of Tecumseth, page 71. name given as Joseph Badrow (Although LDS 1881 census CD has him as Bardow).

1891: microfilm T-6369, Alliston, page 9, name given as Joseph Budreo

Both Joseph & Elizabeth have ages that bounce around! Joseph is 52 in 1871, 62 in 1881 and 60 in 1891. Elizabeth is 62 in 1871, 72 in 1881 and 80 in 1891.

Son of Joseph & Elizabeth is Francis BUDREO, born about 1849. He too was a cooper and in the 1891 census he gives his birthplace as the United States while on his marriage registration New York is given as his birth place. Francis was married to Mariah BOVAIR on 3 Feb 1873 in King twp.; Mariah was about one year younger than her husband. Mariah's parents were Charles BOVAIR & Susannah HUNT and she was born in Ontario.

Maria died in 1935: TORONTO STAR - 8 April 1935
BUDREO - At Ottawa, April 5th, Maria Bovair, age 86 years, widow of the late Francis Budreo and dearly beloved mother of Charles and Harold Budreo of Toronto.
Funeral from her residence, 75 Willow Street on Monday (today) at 2pm. Interment Beechwood cemetery, Ottawa.

Francis died on 19 Jan 1934 in Ottawa.  His birth place was given as Rochester NY. Death reg 9762-34.  His parents were given as Joseph BUDREO born France and Elizabeth McNEIL born Ireland.

Children of Francis & Mariah are:

Joseph Charles, b. April 11, 1876, Tecumseth twp, Simcoe Co. Named after his grandfathers.   He married Bertha Jane FIEGEHEN on 17 Sept 1902 in Toronto.  In the 1911 census they are at 1328 Queen St. West in Toronto with daughter Doris Ida May who was born 17 Aug 1909.    In 1926 Joseph was the informant on his brother Francis's delayed birth reg'n - at that time Joseph was living at 170 Dowling Ave in Toronto.  The birth reg'n also states that Joseph was 6 years older than Francis.

PA, and that he had a son Harold who lived at 75 Willow Ave in Ottawa.

In the 1911 census, Francis (as Emerson) and Annie (as Mertelle) are in Ottawa (as Budres) with a son Hiram who was born Aug 1909.

There is a record of an Annie Myrtle Budreo crossing at Detroit sometime between 1905 and 1957 on

Walter Herald P. , b. September 24, 1886, Alliston, Ontario.  He married Alma May CROWTHER on 14 June 1910 in Toronto. On 27 March 1911 they had a son George Frederick Francis Budreo.  Their residence at the time was 47 Springhurst Ave in Toronto.  Walter died in 1956 and he is buried in Mt. In the 1930 US census there is a Harold BUDREO, age 20, born in English Canada, father born in French Canada, mother born in Canada. To US in 1929, Book keeper in an office.
