[Given to all men at some point a year or two after the war who survived the war.  They were then called the Grand Army of the Republic and one of these was put on their graves at their death.  It was something like American Legion Vets of today.]

William's letters

 

William was paroled as a prisoner of war at City Point, VA, on January 9, 1863 and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland.  By the time he was returned to the Union lines, however, his health had completely failed.   Admitted to the military hospital on the steamboat "New York" on January 11, 1863, William Silveus died of the fever the next day.  The records say in brackets [typhoid] fever.

". . . Camp parole was built outside of Annapolis.  At these facilities, Union prisoners paroled from Confederate prisons could get a bath, a shave, fresh clothing, and in some cases badly needed medical attention. The soldiers would then stay at Camp Parole until they could be either sent home or rejoin their regiments. This is the only known photograph of the Parole barracks and it includes a portrait of the band in front of the camp headquarters."    Taken from:
