Midsummer Superstitious Customs

If a young woman on midsummer eve takes off her shift which she is wearing and washes it, then turns it inside out and hangs it over the back of her chair in silence, near the fire, she will see her future husband who deliberately turns the shift at midnight.

If a young lady walks backwards on midsummer eve, into the garden, and picks a rose, sews it up in a paper bag, and puts it in a dark drawer to remain until Christmas day, she will have the means to see her future husband. On the morning of the Nativity the bag must be opened in silence and the rose placed by the lady in her bosom. Thus she must wear it to church and some young man will either ask for the rose or take it from her without asking. That man is to become her husband.
