MARGARET PARKS

I am searching for more information on Joseph and Mary McGee Parks.According to family history, Margaret PARKS� father named Joseph (James?) PARKS served in the Revolutionary War and was at the surrender of Cornwallis. About 1800 Joseph PARKS and most of his family went to Kentucky.

A Richard Parks BLAND, born in KY and U.S. Senator from MO is reported to be one of Josephs descendants.


MARGARET PARKS, second child of Joseph (James?) and Mary McGee Parks Born about 1767-68 in Frederick Co. MD or PA border area. Married (1) Chidley MATHEWS of Frederick Co. MD about 1790 (2) Adam SHEETS of Allegheny Co. MD in 1807 Died about 1851 at Grantsville, Allegheny Co. MD

About the year 1700 Margaret Riddle married Joseph McGee near Belfast. Ireland and immigrated to this country. (They were Presbyterians and two of Margaret Riddles brothers were in the Kings lifegards. They were Protestants of good social standing in their Native country,) They settled near Tarrytown, Frederick Co. Md.

There were several children but we are interested in Mary who married Joseph Parks of Frederick Co. Md.

Margaret , the second child, who was my grandmother married an Englishman named Chidley Mathews and lived on a farm near Emmitsburg, MD

About 1800 Joseph Parks and all of his family except Margaret Mathews moved to Kentucky where we hear of their descendent Richard Parks Bland being one of them.

Margaret Mathews had five children who lived to spread their descendants over the East and West. Mr. Mathews died in Frederick County , MD in 1804.

Margaret, his wife, and her five children came to Allegany Co. in 1805 and settled on a farm near Echart Mines.

Sallie, the Eldest daughter married William Mattingly of Mt. Savage MD and went to Chilacott, Ohio. There they died leaving a large family.

Polly married Samuel Tomlinson of Green Point, Md. and they also went to the Northern part of Ohio.

Betsy married Joseph Dilley.

James married and lived near Uniontown Pa. James lived to a good old age and he left five children. All live near the old home Uniontown. Pa.

George married Lydia Compton and lived on a farm near Selsby Port, Garrett, Md. He died in 1893, age 89. Left a large family scattered over many States.

In 1807 Margaret Mathews married Adam Sheets. Margaret Brown and Dr. Joseph Sheets were the children of this marriage.

Margaret Mathews Sheets died in 1851 in her 81 year at Grantsville Md.

Joseph Parks our great grandfather was a soldier in the Revolution was at the surrender of Cornwallace of Jamestown.

Note: I (Phyllis Gilli of [email protected]) have not found a Joseph Parks in Frederick Co. MD. but I have found a James Parks who was in the Revolutionary War. I have found Joseph abbreviated as JOS. and James abbreviated as JAS. during this period. It is very possible that the abbreviation was used and later confused. Italis denotes my family line.
