Devore Families
Devore

I am looking for the parents of Hannah Devore born about 1768, I believe she could be a sister to Cornelius Devore of Bedford Co, PA, or some kind of relation, Hannah married John Tomlinson and the Tomlinson family had many dealings with the Devores in Bedford and over the border in Allegany Co MD

A note ....

Devore, J. W., farmer and stock raiser, P.O. Henderson; born February 17, 1848, in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, with his parents in 1850 he moved to Wabash county, Indiana, and in 1856, came to Mills county. He was educated on a farm, and like most farmer boys worked the farm in summer and attended school in winter. He was married November 27, 1872, to Florence, daughter of William and Harriet Van Vliet. That year he located in Indian Creek township, but in 1877 came to his present residence, having purchased the homestead of his father. He has four children, three living: William E., Royal V. and Ata Maude.

Andrew Huston was made quardian of Richard Baker and Rachel DeVore's children on 27 Aug 1820. I do not know the maiden name of Andrew's wife Elinor, I have been searching my new WFT discs for an Elinor DeVore. I have found some Elinor Baker's ( my comment - Corneliues Devores's wife Elizabeth is thought to a Baker. Andrew Huston and his wife Elinor are the same generation as Cornelius and Elizabeth. If Elinor was a Baker she might be Elizabeth's sister making Corelius's daugher Rachel Baker her niece. Or possible Elinor is a related to Richard Baker, a aunt or a older sister. )

Regarding Hannah, if she is the sister of Lanah DeVore, I have heard that Lanah was an orphan. Lanah's husband's will was signed by Aaron DeVore as Lanah's family member.

from Delsa Bost
the author of the DeVore book. This is what she wrote me in 1993 after my trip to Salt Lake. "regarding your question about John Tomlinson and wife, possibly Hannah Devore I do not know the answer. I know there was a William DeVore living in Bedford PA in the year 1779 and he owned 100 acres of land there. In 1784 there were 5 whites in his family. I have never been able to find any names of wife and or children. He was not listed in 1790 census of Bedford. He was apparently the first DeVore in Bedford. He may have moved to VA, but I cannot prove anything.

In about 1780 there was a family of John Hairns, Sr. born 14 Dec 1746 and wife Lanah (Leanor) DeVore born 8 May 1752, living in Bedford. His will was proved in Bedford 3 May 1813. These people would be the same age as your Hannah. They had a daughter Hannah and their eldest child was Daniel Hains. I do not have birthdates except for second son Henry Hains on 11 Mar 1782. Perhaps your Hannah DeVore would be a sister of Lanah. I bellieve (though I cannot prove it) that Lanah was Helena daughter of Willeam Devoor born about 1715 and wife Catherine Schoonmaker and was christened 10 June 1753 in Smithfield, Monroe Co, PA But they do not have a daughter Hannah. The only real clue I have is that Aaron DeVore (I believe) signed John Hains' will as Lanah's family member

Cornelius Devore, an early justice of the peace, probably located in the southern part of the township soon agter the Revolutionary War. He owned one of the first mills in this part of the county. John, Isaac, Jeremiah, Hannah (Ball), Catharine (Baker), Cornelius, Samuel and Charity (Devore) were his children.

Cornelius Devore, son of the Cornelius Devore above mentioned, was also a justice of the peace, and resided in this township. He married Elizabeth Dunlap, and his children were: James, Louisa, Delilah, Sarah, Elizabeth, John, Jacob, Levi, Benjamin and Catoline. James married Lydia Wickard, and is the father of Mary, Caius, Ann, Charity, Caroline, Sarah, John, Laura and Amanda

Case Heard by the Supreme Court of PA at Bedford, April 1795

John Tomlinson had 40 acres in Cumberland Valley Township he had been in possession for 8 or 9 years by having tenants who paid him rent. John Baker his last tenant permitted Cornelius Devore to come into possesion in 1792. John Devore cultivated the land for his brother, Cornelius Devore. In 1793 the prosecutor, John Tomlinson, asked John Devore to accompany him to the farm and to give him possession. John Devore refused since the property was his brothers. Tomlinson then laid his hand gently of him, the defendant John Devore stepped back and picked up a stick and bid him stand off.

Elwood Devores Father was Jacob Devore b 1794 Washington Co. Penn.

(Elwood was Adeline's Uncle HOWEVER Adeline's father Lewis Devore was an adopted son and not a true brother of Elwood.

Jacob Devore's father was Joshua Devore b 1775 Penn, not sure of county at this time.

Joshua Devore' s father was Henry Devore b 1742, I believe at this time in France.

Henry Devore's father was James Devore(DeVoor) b 1710-1720 and again I believe in France.

There is some indication at this time (unverified) that James Devore's father was Daniel De Veaux b 1660 (?) and mother was Hanna Frans. Again, I have some indication they were from Eastern France and possibly were Hugenots.

There is some info that Daniel De Veaux had another son, Cornelius Hendrick De Vore b 1698 and this may be the Cornelius Devore that originally went to Bedford County Penn and got that very prolific family of Devores started.

Some information indicates that James Devore (Devoor) came to the States in the early 1750's stopping first in NJ then on to Penn, Bedford Co. and then moved west to Washington Co. Penn. He had twelve children and two wives, his secondnamed Elizabeth.

The children were Jacob b 1739, Andrew b 1741, Henry b1742, John b 1745, Sara b1747, Rachel b1749, Samuel b 1751, David b 1758,Moses b 1760, Catherine b 1762 Frances b 1764 and James b 1766.

My father Neil DeVore Sr.

My Grandfather Ralph E. DeVore

My G Grandfather Ralph A. DeVore

My GG Grandfather John DeVore

My GGG Grandfather Ralph DeVore

My GGGG Grandfather Henry jr. A name from my dad

My GGGGG Grandfather Hendrick

My GGGGGG Grandfather Daniel

Thru my GGG Grandfather Ralph I am pretty confident, but before that things

are a bit iffy. I am sure Ralph had brothers and or sisters, but no-one is

listed. Betty Manns book showed he was the only son of a Henry. But as he was

born in 1780 in New Jersey and there seems to be other DeVore's born around

that time, the chances are he did have siblings. My GG Grandfather John died

Sept 1855 at the ripe old age of 43. He left a wife Mary Ann Bodine and 4 or

5 children, Louisa, Ralph A., Margaret, Anna, and Martha. I haven't been able

to locate any of them in New Jersey in the 1860 Census. Louisa the oldest

would have only been 10. They were from a small town called Mendham, New

Jersey. I have been there and seen GG Grandfather Johns, GGG Grandfather

Ralphs, and GG Aunt Margarets grave.

If any of you can shed any additional light on my lines I would appreciate

it.
